Heres my setup

Sony KV-36XBR450 36" 4:3 Television

Mitsubishi HDTV Receiver with Directv (Model SR-HD5)

Component video cables

Unknown OTA antenna

Wow, really impressed with the picture quality, I have a few questions about aspect ratios and other issues. Right now the system is used only for OTA reception and is setup for 4:3 television and "Full" picture mode

1. Shows like CSI:Vegas and Lost look great and in widescreen mode, 2" top and bottom are black for the cropping. Some of the programming is in 4:3 format but is cropped into the middle of my screen. 2.5" on each side of the screen. Any reason for this? Any other receiver show 4:3 in the full 4:3 mode?

2. Should I worry about my image burning?

3. Is there any receiver that has the option to move Closed Captioning to the bottom of the screen, I am not using that area for video anyways, seems like an obvious option.

Thanks

OMan. All my sympathy. Bad mistake. 4:3 sucks, now and forevermore. Return it, dump it, give it to Goodwill. Get you a 16:9 anyway you can, before you waste anymore time and money on getting the PQ you want....

FWIW,

HD channels always broadcast in 16:9 format, for non-HD programs they upconvert them and add black bars on the sides. On a 4:3 set this will give you black bars on all 4 sides - it can't be avoided.

Had the TV for years now, no way will I dump it or give it away. Xbox, PS2, Gamecube games look awesome and there is sooo little true HD for me to really invest more money. I got the receiver for free from a friend and the antenna on my roof is probably 10-12 years old, lmao. I spent hours researching for a new antenna but I figured I would give the old one a shot since it was already pointed in the right direction, and it seems to work great. I found out that changing to 480i and cropped gives a great picture on 4:3 content, but its a hassle to change all the settings and switch over to S-video.

I'm guessing there isnt a receiver that outputs 480i through the component cables. If there is, please let me know, or maybe there is a receiver out there with one-button switch from (1080i Full mode / Component) to (480i Cropped mode / S-video)
