Depends on your display. My display (NEC LT150 which is an XGA DLP PJ) looks best in 720p. 1080i looks a little soft and has more jaggies on straight line (diagonal edges of buildings and handrails, etc.) For sure, it will look better than 480p. I don't have this player but with my AVT-3700 scaler, 480i->720p by component on a cheap Daewoo 5700 DVD player looks so much better than 480p by Panny RP62 or Sharp DV-S25U (both DCDi based). 480i->1080i looks better also but slightly worst than 720p. I think it's because my PJ is XGA (1024X768) which is closest to 720p. Your display may prefer 1080i (most HDTV direct view or RPTV are).
