How do these new DVD players give us higher resolutions? Can someone explain the process?

Is the image of a dvd upconverted to 1080i drastically better than a good pro-scan dvd?

Depends on your display. My display (NEC LT150 which is an XGA DLP PJ) looks best in 720p. 1080i looks a little soft and has more jaggies on straight line (diagonal edges of buildings and handrails, etc.) For sure, it will look better than 480p. I don't have this player but with my AVT-3700 scaler, 480i->720p by component on a cheap Daewoo 5700 DVD player looks so much better than 480p by Panny RP62 or Sharp DV-S25U (both DCDi based). 480i->1080i looks better also but slightly worst than 720p. I think it's because my PJ is XGA (1024X768) which is closest to 720p. Your display may prefer 1080i (most HDTV direct view or RPTV are).

Ok thanks for the info. How do the scalers work? A link with some info would be appreciated as well.
