Questions re: CRT tube tape

I am replacing the CRTs in my BD800 with new; good rainy day project and well, it's raining. The new ones don't have any tape on them. What is the purpose of the tape on the tube? Any suggestions as to how many wraps (B & R have 1 wrap, G has 2 on the ones I am replacing)? And what kind of tape is recommended?

It's just to add friction to hold the yokes in place. Surgical tape works fine. The local drug store lady stares at me when I buy 6 rolls at a time.

I told her once I was into bondage, that really shut her up!
