quick question about xbox I/O

1296 Views 20 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  RTRic
I am planning on getting the xbox 360 pro and needed some info on what connections.

1. Will a standard non-M$ hdmi cable work? Also, I can use an hdmi->dvi convertor also if I want to hook it up to my monitor that only has dvi?

2. Is the component proprietary on the console end like Wii/PS3?

3. For audio, are there red/white rca output jacks or is it a big block connected to the component cables?

4. Is there a headphone jack for desktop speakers?

5. Can the above mentioned analog audio outputs work in tandem with hdmi/dvi?

Thanks.

"M$"

I'd help you, but you used this stupid god damn abbreviation. So now I won't.

1. It's not 1995.

2. We aren't 13.

Jesus people are mean here.

I meant "Microsoft". I actually like microsoft and Bill Gates so no hard feelings. I don't associate M$ with anything bad really. Maybe others do.

And instead of a quick question, it will be several, like half a dozen.

And no I am not trying to act like a 13 year old.

So who else do I have to make up to that I might have offended?

While you're at it, can you please answer my questions? Pretty please?

No, people aren't really mean here... they just like to poke fun. Trust me, I've been a target more than once.
This is a gaming forum, you'll get that from time to time -- and its much more civil here than true dedicated gaming forums like GameSpot or IGN.

btw, 257Tony answered your questions in post #4... check his quote of your post.

Tony already did back at post #4. Maybe you want to read your own thread?
Well excuse me if I can't see red well. Thanks Tony. Oh, and the gamestop guy tried to con me into buying an elite by saying he owned the latest xbox pro and it didn't have a hdmi port.

You have to be the only one...

LOL. And people forget that red doesn't show up well on the "black" AVS scheme which a lot of people still use (I assume it's still the default scheme).

1. Yes, any HDMI cable will work. Yes, you can use an HDMI to DVI convertor.

2. Yes, the AV connector that contains the component video signals is proprietary, though there are numerous third party cables available.

3. Analog audio is carried in the same cable, from the same connector as the component video signals.

4. No, there is no headphone jack, though you could use an RCA to 3.5mm phone plug adapter. Connect the RCA end to the analog audio from the main AV cable to the adapter and the 3.5mm plug to your desktop speakers.

5. Yes, analog audio can work simultaneous with HDMI, though the standard Microsoft HDTV component cable will not physically fit at the same time with an HDMI cable connected to the console. You can modify the connector on the HDTV component cable such that it will coexist with the HDMI cable. Even then, you will experience a minor issue whereby if you switch the monitor to a different input and then back to HDMI/DVI, the 360 will reboot itself. That issue can be resolved by disconnecting pin 28 in the HDTV component cable connector, either by disassembling the connector and cutting a jumper wire, or by simply applying a small piece of tape over pin 28 on the business end of the connector. Keep the SD/HDTV switch on the connector in the SD position and it will work as intended. If that is all too much for you, Microsoft also sells an "audio only" dongle for 40 or 50 dollars (supplied with the elite model) that is slim enough to coexist with the HDMI cable and makes the proper connections to prevent the reboot issue when switching the monitor input away and then back.

A little clarification for the programmers in here (and I am not taking sides).

Writing it as "M$" started in the days of QBasic (developed by Microsoft), when you needed the dollar sign after string variables. It began a silly joke, since Microsoft was often abbreviated MS, people thought it was funny to write it as M$. Just like a QBasic string variable.

Of course now most people use it to infer that Microsoft is all about money.

...as a sign of studied disrepect.

Which raises the question of what kind of person would want to buy a product, any product, from a company they so despise. Or choose to casually flaunt that attitude...

Intent aside, that kind of "short-hand" tends to raise the hackles of a lot of otherwise polite and helpful folks...

Plus the darklord.

Well I use the M$ and I love the company. I use just because it ensures that people know I mean Microsoft and not any number of things someone could take the letters MS to mean. I'm typing this post thanks to Windows XP and have 3 XBOX 360 which have never RROD on me. I think people just need to stop letting their panties get in a bunch over the M$ symbol. I think if the OP really hated the company, they wouldn't be making a purchase of the 360 and posting a pretty benign set of questions.

Don't sweat the jerks that pop their heads here Silverwolf0. Rather than make that nasty reply and try to make you feel small, he could have just not posted anything and allow someone to actually help you out. Have fun with your future 360 gaming.

Ultimately it is a matter of manners.

We are all responsible for the words we choose to use and should not be surprised if uding charged words and abbreviations result in less-than-polite responses. The use of M$ in a Microsoft-specific forum reeks of intent to annoy--troll bait. This being a relatively polite, relatively mature site, most would-be respondents--myself included--chose to ignore the apparent "bait" and/or lurk.

Nobody owes anybody anything on the internet, of course, so nobody needs to apologize for themselves or anybody else, but a bit of reflexion on unconscious use of slurs in polite context might be appropriate.

After all, one would not refer to ex-president Clinton as "bubba" at a Democratic party gathering, President George W. Bush as "dubya" at a republican gathering, or incoming president Obama as "Hussein", and *then* expect to be taken seriously after opening with a gratuitous insult.

Think of it as the use of the "N" word in public. Somewhere, somehow, somebody *is* going to be offended, regardless of who you are or where you're coming from.

And it is either naive or disingenuous to pretend otherwise.

Hint: if concerned that the abreviation "MS" in a 360 forum might be misconstrued as a reference to Muscular Sclerosis or a female human of undetermined marital status, there is nothing wrong with writing out the full company name: Microsoft...

Cheers!

Now, back to your regularly scheduled head-whacking in Fallout...
