Quick Question RE Organizing PC Cables...

300 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  jimwhite
goal is to organize the interior cabling of my htpc as much as possible; pretty happy so far except for the tangle of psu cables. i dug up some colored electrical tape i had lying around and wrapped different sections of the psu cabling using different colors - it worked fantastically and looks great.

however it just occured to me that all of the cable wraps i have seen on mod sites seem to be made of porous material... do these friggin' psu wires need to breathe? or do you think it is o.k. to go with the electrical tape (snuggly wrapped)?

Electrical tape is functional and easy to apply, but a taped up wire is very rigid. Dedicated modders use mesh or braided sleeving simply because it's a lot more flexible and looks sleeker; however, they're a major PITA to install.

bless your heart for such a quick response - i can move on now. btw, i see what you mean by the tape making the bundle somewhat rigid. i can live with it as long as it won't burn down my house; and, as you mentioned, it is a snap to apply.

also, i did find a couple of sites which showed the mesh installation procedure - i agree, it looked like a real pia and i did not consider it for a nanosecond. thanks again.
One trick I like to use is to tuck cables underneath the motherboard. It really helps you get the LED, switch, USB audio and sometimes even the IDE cables out of the way.

Some of the fat PSU cables may be too thick or too short to route underneath the board but you can get pretty creative with that. It really cleans things up and helps keep the airflow unobstructed.

When I purchased 50 APC UPS's at work, each came with a 3/4" wide by 10" long Velcro Cable Strap which we did not use.... I've been using them here and they are GREAT!!! Maybe these can be purchased via other sources?

There is a reason that the motherboard is raised. ;) Putting cables underneath it could create some problems. It is not likely, but it still could happen.
I thought the motherboard was raised in order to keep it from touching the inside panel of a metal case and shorting out.

You are exactly right. What if one of the cables split open? There goes the computer.

It is but that nice little space it creates is also perfect for wires :)

Hope you have that shield finished atop your house to deflect falling airplane engines....
