Get a Pioneer 106 or 120 black slot loader. Then use DVD Utilities to lock the DVD playback speed to 1x. The result is an almost silent drive.

You can get the utility here:

This only works with the Pioneer drives specified above.

How about for a silver drive?
The front loading Pioneers have like most drives detachable face plates. You could take it off and paint it maybe?

I have 2 of the pioneers, a 106 and a 120, the 120 was white when I purchased it - I painted that one black with good results.

Just use the new Sharpie Silver permanent marker pens. Remove the faceplate and "paint" with the marker. Works with a fresh new black Sharpie marker too ;)

Doesn't leave brush/stroke marks, either
Or use a couple light coat of metallic spray paint. I do this to my cheap cases and they look a hundred times better.
Vinyl paint works great on drive faceplates. I have used plasti-kote vinyl color with excellent results. http://www.plastikote.com/plastikote...uct=UltraVinyl

Bought mine at Home Depot. Vinyl paint will bond to the plastic and will not peal off. I have used both the Pioneer 106 and 120, I recommend the 106 it does not have any mechanical resistance when the disc is inserted. The 120 has guide mechanism you push against when inserting the disc, not quite as elegant.

Does it improve the sound & video too? ;)
I decided on the Pioneer DVD-120S, but I can't find it for a decent price ... most of the places don't have it in stock, as it's supposedly discontinued, or are charging huge shipping fees, putting the price up towards $50-60, which seems excessive for just a player. Are there any other drives that will do the 1x speed hack?
The Toshiba SD-M1712 is highly recommended because it's very quiet and inexpensive (~$30).

I also intend to buy a DVD player for my system, but I would like to record. Any recommendations for a dvd recorder that is quiet, inexpensive and records quickly (don't care about play speed)?
Does the SD-M1712 have a software hack to lower the speed, or is it just quiet naturally?

It's quiet on its own. It's the quietest drive I've yet heard -- it makes less noise than a fluid bearing hard drive and is essentially inaudible unless you have your ear to it. The Pioneer slot-loaders are jet engines by comparison. (My Pioneer 305 on one system is the loudest DVD-ROM I've ever heard.)

Caveat: I've noticed that DVDs tend to rattle in my Toshiba drive a little more often than they do in other drives. This can be fixed with a little tape on the center hole of the DVD, but it's annoying nonetheless.
