How quiet are you guys managing to get the Pioneer using the speed utility?

I know it makes it quieter than normal and this drive is recommended a lot but I have a Toshiba 1502 on my HTPC and a Pioneer 106s on my office machine. The Toshiba seems to spin at a barely audible level, whereas the Pioneer is very obvious.

The reason I ask is that new case designs are appearing that like to use the Pioneer because of its slot feed, which gives a very clean look. I would have no problem switching drives if I can get the Pioneer as quiet as the Toshiba which on it's downside has a very noisy tray action.

What are your observations.?

I am using a Lite-On 165H and it is pretty quiet, both when playing and when you eject the tray.

I'm using an LG 4320B combo drive and its noisy.

I bought it because of all the good reviews from various sources which claimed that it was a low noise drive.

One big problem with the LG drive is that you can't reduce the drive spin speed by software as can be done with the Pioneer drives.

Therefore you cant reduce the noise.

My issue with the Pioneer is that reducing the speed/perfomance mode doesn't really bring it ant where near the quietness of the Toshiba, or am I missing something.

I have a Toshiba 1502.

Could someone explain to me why on some DVD's, mostly PAL, it spins really fast (more noise) and on others it doesn't. This also happens on NTSC but not as often.

I've got three dvd drives. The Pioneer was my first DVD drvie. It has always spun down via hitting pause when a movie starts. Bought the Toshiba per recommendation on AVSForum. The Toshiba would not spin down via pause as the Pioneer did. Tried software to spin down the Pioneer and the Toshiba automatically without any luck. Used the Pioneer until the Lite-On arrived. Installed the Lite-On and it spun down automatically without software. Like the Lite-On best.

#1) Lite-On LTD-165 (Quiet / Auto Spin Down)

#2) Pioneer DVD-115 (Quiet / Manual Spin Down)

#3) Toshiba SD-M1402 (Loud / No Spin Down)

I have found the pioneer utility is broken under XP the queit mode does not stick as soon as you put another disc in it resets to performance mode not the case under ME.

It does work if you put the disk in and wait till it spins down then run the utility select quiet mode and then play the dvd but this is really hopeless.
