Quiet for College

I won't be in college for a few years, but...

Say I want to listen to/feel my music and movies without disturbing the neighboring people. Would some good headphones and a tactile kit suffice for that?

Damn straight it would. Check out my response at the bottom of this thread - http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=960059
So I guess when I finally do get in a room... I could buy a headphone amp, processor, headphones, and a tactile transducer to take care of sound without bothering people, within budget.

Well that's like 3-4 years from now anyway...so yeah.
Or, forget the headphone amp and just buy a receiver that has Dolby Headphone built in. The harman/kardon receivers do (most of them) and a couple of the Marantz ones, and at least one recent Denon that I've seen. Even better, get a Cary 11a pre/pro and forget the receiver as you don't need power amps, just a headphone amp.
All Yamaha receivers feature Silent Cinema for headphones. I never use it because I love my system but if I had to be quiet, I would definitely buy a great pair of headphones and use the Silent Cinema feature. I tried it and it makes a massive difference over regular 2 channel processing.
You'll probably want some kind of speakers though as you will have people watching with you a lot especially if you live in a dorm.

Excellent point. Dorm life means having a lot of people around most of the time.

Anyway, to the OP, yeah, you can definitely do what you hope to do, and if you budget and save now, 3 or 4 years from now you can get yourself a pretty killer system and excellent headphones. I applaud your goal setting, forward thinking, and consideration of others.
