Well I am almost done with my first system. Details (including regrets list) to follow.

I bought the Plextor drive for ripping/burning etc, no complaints other then the airplane lifting off when I start a DVD. Any recomendations on a quiter 2nd drive just for playing DVD's?

I've read on a few web sites that thoshiba makes silent dvd drives. I've been hunting for the same answer to your question. For $30 it's worth a try. This is the drive I'm going to order: Toshiba SD-M1802.

After trying many different DVD-ROM drives, and having issues with occasional DVD title compatibility etc., I ended up with a Pioneer 106S slot loader. Never had any compatibility issues with it whatsoever, and you can also use the Pioneer utility to change the drive to Quite mode for DVD playback. The drive is extremely quite, and I also get the great convenience of slot loading, which avoids having to eject and return the tray when inserting a disc etc.
