I've been doing some reading here and elsewhere regarding the S-video output capablilities (and image quality) of the Radeon 7200/7500/8500.

From what I can tell, all three are capable of outputting 800x600 via the S-video output however I've only seen posts of the 7500 being able to output 1024x768. Can anyone elaborate or confirm this? I know that with my 7200 the max resolution via the S-video output is 800x600 with higher resolutions creating a virtual desktop. Is there some reason or technical limitation as to why 1024x768 isnt supported accross the board or is this just a low priority driver issue?

1024x768 wouldn't improve the image quality as the TV resolution isn't that high to begin with, if anything it just creates more artifacts.

The idea is to set 720x480 with overscan enabled in NTSC and 768x576 with overscan in PAL.

720x480 would certainly be nice but I was unaware that S-video could otput anything besides 4:3? I would certainly welcome it.

1024x768 would be much more desireable for websurfing. my question is mainly why is 1024x768 not supported accross the board.
