Rainbows on DLP RPTV

287 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Huckster
Will rainbows still be a factor on a DLP based RPTV? The reason I'm asking is that I would like to know if I am going to notice the rainbows and a store near me has a Panasonic DLP based RPTV on display. Thanks.

Rainbows can exist in a rear projection DLP based display. It's my understanding that most/all of these displays will be using 6 segment color wheels, so that effectively doubles the spin rate of three/four segment color wheels commonly used in business projectors. It's still possible to notice a rainbow with these wheels, but it should be less a problem.

Also, with a smaller screen the rainbow should be less visible.
For NTSC, the Panasonic set uses 3x with a 6 segment wheel (effective 6x). For PAL it uses 3.5x (7x effective).

The Mitsubishi and Hitachi sets use 6 segment wheels, 3x (6x effective) for PAL and 2.5x (5x effective) for NTSC.
