based on the comic book by Dennis Liu the series follows the story of a woman named Nicole who raises her son Dion after the death of her husband Mark...the normal dramas of raising a son as a single mom are amplified when Dion starts to manifest several mysterious, superhero-like abilities...Nicole must now keep her son’s gifts secret with the help of Mark’s best friend Pat, and protect Dion from antagonists out to exploit him while figuring out the origin of his abilities...

Alisha Wainwright (Shadowhunters) stars as Nicole, alongside Jason Ritter (Parenthood) as Pat and newcomer Ja’Siah Young as Dion...Michael B. Jordan, also an executive producer on the show, portrays Nicole’s late husband Mark...Season 1 drops on October 4th...

Interesting perspective on the well-worn superhero genre: a working single mom raising a small child with abilities. Here's the full trailer. Looks promising. Kid's got lots of powers: telekinesis, teleportation, shoots electricity, invisibility. "Why isn't my poop invisible?" lol

at first I was confused since that trailer was from 2015...then I realized it was a trailer for the comic...I didn't even realize they made live action trailers for comics...but I can see that translating to the small screen...

Good catch. I just assumed that was the Netflix show's trailer. I did think it looked somewhat low-budgeted but still very watchable. Now I'm impressed with how good that short looks for a "proof on concept" video.

First look at the new Michael B. Jordan-produced Netflix drama Raising Dion

By Sarah Rodman August 16, 2019 at 10:30 AM EDT

Alisha Wainwright didn’t think twice before signing on to play Nicole, a single mother in Atlanta struggling financially while trying to help her gifted son (Ja’Siah Young) thrive, on Netflix’s Raising Dion.

“You come across so many superhero stories that usually are from the perspective of the person inflicted with the powers,” says the 30-year-old actress. “It was so refreshing to hear the story from the person whose life is so dramatically affected by that: the caregiver of that young person.”

Indeed, Dion’s “gifts” are of a supernatural nature. (Telekinesis is one that manifests early in the nine-episode series, which is based on Dennis Liu and Jason Piperberg’s comic book of the same name and launches Oct. 4.) But Dion has a pretty good sense of humor, too — a trait shared by 8-year-old Young, who says he took the role because “I should be a role model. And I really like superheroes!”

The drama also stars Kevin (Probably) Saves the World’s Jason Ritter as Pat, a close friend to Nicole’s late husband, Mark, a scientist who died under mysterious circumstances. Mark, a recurring character on the series, is played by Raising Dion executive producer Michael B. Jordan. As a Black Panther fan, Young says it was “amazing” to work with Jordan. And although he was a “bad guy” in that movie, Young is quick to point out that Jordan is “a good guy in real life.”

EW’s sneak peeks offer a glimpse at Wainwright and Young reacting to Dion’s impressive powers, including a run-in with some cereal and a boat ride complete with levitating fish. But in reality, those reactions were often the result of someone holding “a silver ball” in their line of vision, or, in the case of the lake scene, well, nothing. “They did some really beautiful drawings of the fish in the air,” Wainwright says of the effects team. “So I had some concept art of what was actually happening, but all of our reactions in that boat are to nothing. Those were the most fun ones, because you are in complete control of what you think you see.” Young also enjoyed the imagination exercise: “It was really exciting but challenging…but it was really cool to make those faces.”

Between Raising Dion and her recent gig on Shadowhunters, you might surmise that Wainwright is a fan of the supernatural, but “I don’t believe in ghosts,” she says with a laugh. “Sure, maybe there are aliens out there, but if something happened where things just started floating around, or someone I knew started doing weird stuff that I couldn’t explain with physics or gravity, yeah, I’m running. I am not staying anywhere near that situation.”

We finished this over the weekend. Was not that thrilled with it. The kids were just a little to young to be enjoyable and were more annoying than anything else. Plus the kid actor playing Dion was not that good of an actor. The highlight were the scenes with Michael Jordan, he knocked it out of the park but regretfully he is in it for just a few scenes. The reveal of the big baddie was also a little questionable with no build up or anything that would make you believe that person would be evil. Special effects were pretty bad and even the wire/levitation was bad. The crooked man did look cool though. Overall very disappointed.

I've watched about 3 or 4 shows and completely agree with you on this. I'm really on the fence about continuing it. Its kind of in the realm of the Runaways second season. Some good, lots of bad, annoying kids.

‘Raising Dion’ Superhero Drama Renewed For Season 2 By Netflix

After being named one of Netflix’s 10 most popular series of 2019, the superhero drama Raising Dion is coming back for a second season. The announcement was made today via a moving video featuring renowned Senegalese painter Bou Bou painting a portrait of the series leads Nicole played by Alisha Wainwright and the titular hero Dion played by newcomer Ja’Siah Young.

Carol Barbee is set to return as showrunner for the sophomore season which will include eight one-hour episodes. Michael B. Jordan, who also appeared in the first season will return as executive producer alongside Kenny Goodman, Kim Roth, Dennis Liu and Charles D. King’s MACRO. Production will begin this year.

The first season of Raising Dion debuted on Netflix in October and follows the story of Nicole (Wainwright), who raises her son Dion (Young) after the death of her husband, Mark (Jordan). The normal dramas of raising a son as a single mom are amplified when Dion starts to manifest several mysterious, superhero-like abilities. Nicole must now keep her son’s gifts secret with the help of Mark’s best friend Pat (Jason Ritter), and protect Dion from antagonists out to exploit him while figuring out the origin of his abilities.

In addition to recently being ranked #1 0 most popular 2019 Netflix series overall, Raising Dion was the streamer’s #1 most popular kids and family series for last year, cementing its renewal chances.

Based on the few comments above I had planned on passing on this show (too many shows, too little time). Now to see it among the top 10 shows of the year on NF and renewed makes me curious. Not that I'd watch any show in that top 10 list (I only watch about half of them). But the subject matter is up my alley. Maybe Raising Dion's popularity is due in part to its family-friendliness (like Stranger Things)?

There are a LOT of family elements in this show so that could of helped boost it. I think there were a lot of issues and rough edges that I hope they fix in season 2. I by no means think this was top 10 material after seeing all the stuff that came out this year that was by far better.

Started watching this. The special effects are really excellent in this. The story line about the crooked man and its background is actually pretty interesting. The whole problem is the lead kid actor playing Dion is just horrible. Can't act at all, kind of ruins the whole experience. The supporting characters are OK but man that kid is really bad. Will stick with it because I do like the special effects and the story.
