I can sum up the following pretty quickly.
This guy is a smeghead...and he needs emergency surgery to correct his rectal cranial inversion.

First of all, both WSYX and WTTE will start out with DTV this fall with 3x4 480i. We will move forward with higher resolutions as the public demands it, and when the networks provide it. The cost to get on the air this way will be minimal, we can then invest in the higher resolution/progressive scan equipment later. The amount of actual 16X9 high definition content available to us at this time does not justify HD equipment. We will not line double or upconvert NTSC to HDTV as there is no benefit to the eyeballs in doing so. The best long term answer for us is to wait and move on HD when there is programming to support it, rather than upconvert and disappoint consumers. Second, the formats. After DTV snowballs for a little while, Fox will be offering everything in 480p 16x9. This is their HD format. It looks very, very good. Remember that NTSC equals 480H x 455v(color), but really only 1 field on screen at a time means the resolution is only "true" with a still picture. Motion can potentially lower the viewable resolution to 262H by 455V while adding interlacing artifacts. Also, NTSC color only allows for a vertical resolution of 455 lines. It's geometrically wrong with a 4x3 picture. 480p will have 720 lines H, so pixel size will be square. When you see true 480p for the first time you will agree it is "high resolution", twice as good to anything you know now. ABC's choice is 720P 16x9. Only problem is they don't have but 2 shows either native to this format or converted from film this way. Nor have they shipped the digital affiliate package to us yet. When there is programming, we will pass it through. The 720p I've seen looks truly amazing, I can't wait for it! If you are worried about a long term plan to upconvert NTSC to HDTV, don't. Our long term plan is to move into 480p and 720p when programming supports it and the market demands it. Hope this answers any questions. |
