I am ready to build a screen for my Optoma HD20 1080p projector. I have been doing some reading on screen materials, but have not read anything that convinces me to use any certain material.

I am just looking for an inexpensive screen that will give results very close to that of a manufactured projector screen. Many people have mentioned blackout cloth from Joann's. Others have mentioned counter-top laminate. There is way too much information on here to sort through. I will read through some of it, but just looking for some basics.

I would like to know if the blackout cloth comes in rolls wider than 54" because that would limit my screen size to about 110" 16:9 if I recall correctly.

Anyway, input appreciated.

I have built a couple of screens with duck canvas painted with Behr Ultra Pure White (Flat). Gain is about 1.0. This produces a superb picture for about $50.

The nice thing about duck canvas is it comes in widths up to 12 feet.

The frame itself can be made with poplar. It is available in 1 x 3's at Home Depot. Total cost in materials is about $100.
