Hi there...

Does anyone have experience with a NON POWERED subwoofer being

hooked up with rear channel speakers?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

A little more information would be of help- what are you looking to accomplish? Is a subwoofer already in the system? Pre/pro or receiver? Speaker configuration? Yadda yadda yadda...

Welcome, I contemplated using a rear sub (powered) and with posting on forums this question and reading the responses I was deterred from doing it. I realized that the signal that goes to surrounds are not as active as the front signal, and what ever bass used would be minimus at best. I also came to the conclusion that surround bass can be a tad distracting since bass would coming directly from behind you and not from all around as bass should be. Bass is suppose to be non-directional not coming from a central location, rear bass may defeat this.

Hi guys, thanks for getting back to me...

I'm not acctually thinking of this for my system.

More so, I'm looking for general opinions on the matter.

Here's the scenario

A guy has an old surround unit. The fronts are full range, floor standing

speakers (spkr A). He has used the satellites from a non powered sat/sub

system for his rears. He adds a pair of outdoor speakers (spkr B).

He then tries to incorporate the sub with the fronts (on spkr A), which

causes the system to shut down. Upon disconnecting the sub, the system

works fine.

Now he's thinking, in order to use the sub, that it should be included

with the rears; as a 3 piece sat/sub system.

OK... what do you guys think?

Thanks again.

I use a rear sub and connect my rear satelites to it. I also have a front sub. The rear sub isn't always active as not that many soundtracks send full range signals to the rears. The soundtrack for Saving Private Ryan is one that does and man does my rear sub get a workout! It really adds to the experience! The older model NHT subs have separate amplifiers (SW1P, SW2P and SW3P). I have an NHT SW1P amplifier in my rack, I run a speaker connection to the separate subwoofer and then run another speaker connection to my rear satelites. I use the Yamaha DSP A1 to power this config. To be honest I wasn't sure this setup was going to sound good but I've been extremely happy with the results. Good Luck!
