A buddy of mine wants me to buy his cousin's 55" Toshiba Rear Projection TV. It's model number is 55H70. It looks to be about 5 years old. He said he cousin bought it new five years ago and has had it since with no problems or repair. He's asking $250 as he just wants to get rid of it since he has already bought a new tv. The PQ looks fantastic, even on SD channels. HD channels are amazing.

My question is, is it worth it? How long do these sets usually last before things "go out"? How much can I expect to pay in servicing if things do go wrong? I need all the help I can get right now as he wants it out quick and at that price, I don't think it will last long. I am thinking of buying this for my parents for their anniversary as they have never had a large screen tv and they would love it, even if it is older technology.

Thanks for any and all advise you can give.

first off do you have an hdtv already? if not for $250.00 you really can't lose in my opinion. crt rear projection usually will last a long time as long as they are well taken care of. i have a toshiba 48 inch crt rear projection tv thats 13 years old and still has a pretty good pic for it's age. i clean the lens and mirror every year or two and i don't set the setting like contrast and brightness way up. like any tv something can go wrong , it could be in 6 months in could be six years, for $250 though i would take my chances. as far as price if you had to get something fixed on it that would depend on what is wrong ,but mr. bob or another tech on here probably can give you a ball park of what to expect to fix that tv. the most common thing to go from what i have read is the IC's . good luck in whatever you do.

Thanks for the quick reply. I do have an HDTV, but I'm purchasing this one for my parents who don't have a lot of money, but can afford this one. This will be they're first HD set and I want them to be impressed. I figured it's a good price, but was concerned about the age. You've helped ease my concern some. The guy selling it says that the image quality is outstanding still and he has had no problems.

I haven't asked him about usage or burn in yet, but I guess I will see that when I get there. Have you noticed any burn in with yours over the last 13 years?

EDIT: My largest concern is how long it would last after they recieve it. I didn't want to give them a tv that would need soldering done within six months.

Well cared for, with videophile usage, fully calibrated and well cleaned CRT RPTVs, IMHO, easily have a lifetime of 10 years minimum, and with videophile treatment will look BETTER than new at all times all thru those 10 years, and longer.

MINIMUM. I have repaired and calibrated 18 year old Mit's that , their owners swear look like the day they bought them 18 years earlier.

HOP on it!

IF you ever need to repair it, chances are it will be the conv ICs, which would run you about $3-400 to repair.

IF something else goes out on it, bail out, you haven't lost anything. Tosh's are not known as becoming troublesome units as the years progress, they actually have a very low repair-needed rating, as such sets go. But if something does go wrong on it and it is not the convergence, chances are it will be a ***** to fix.

But for $250, you can dump it if that ever happens.

HOP on it!

No doubt, it's a great deal.

For Mom and Dad, however, spring the extra couple hundred for a new Hitachi F59 CRT rear projection television.

The one year warranty will be peace of mind for your parents.

You will find the prices on the F59 models to be incredibly attractive.

Yeah, I wouldn't even blink. Buy it. Since it's for your parents, just make sure you explain to them what they need to do to maximize picture quality. I know some older folks who buy HDTVs and connect them to their cable box with a coax cable and wonder why their PQ is horrible.

Well, so it turns out the guy sold it to someone else for $200 after promising me he wouldn't until I could come by and see it. Go figure. He sold it in less than 24 hours, it's not like I left him waiting. I was on my way there when he calls and says sorry. Oh well, the search is on.

Thanks for all of your replies. I will keep looking. They are not ready to spend 750 for a tv, so Circuit City might not be the best option for us. I would throw in a couple hundred, but not quite that much. Just bought a house.

I agree! Guy's a ----. (Ryhmes with stick...)

Maybe he was desperate, but that's no excuse not to call you and give you first shot, before letting it go.

Check Sears current price on the Hitachi 51F59--$599.
