Thanks to all of you video gurus, I got sucked into the world of front projection a couple of months back. I decided on an NEC LT150. Prior to receiving my projector, I was indecisive as to whether I should use an HTPC or a standalone DVD player. Based on all of your advice, I went ahead and built an HTPC. Upon receiving the projector I decided I would also purchase a Panasonic RP56 DVD player so I could compare the two sources side by side. Of course I prefered the HTPC, but the convenience of the Panasonic combined with its awesome video performance (though not as stellar as the HTPC) was too great to ignore. I put a lot of money into that HTPC, and I'm wondering what I should do. I already own a computer, and I'm fresh out of college with no $. The only place I can think to sell the HTPC is right here. My question is what do you think is a reasonable asking price? Here are the specs:

AMD 1700XP Processor

256 MB DDR RAM (Micron)

64 MB ATI Radeon (VE or LE... not sure, has 64 MB RAM)

Soundblaster Live 5.1

Windows 98SE (found this to provide better performance, but support for video and DD/DTS 5.1.... Windows XP is a pain in the ass)

Maxtor 40 GB Hard Drive

Sony DVD Drive

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well,

You didn't mention what the Motherboard, Case, and Power Supply were and that could be important. I assume you're including the Windows 98SE install disc since the new owner would need it in case the need to re-install the software came about. It may be nice to determine exactly what the Radeon card is since that's important around here. There's a difference between built by ATI and Powered by ATI.

You also should mention the model of the Sony DVD drive so people would know what that was.

The short answer to you question is it's worth whatever you can get for it. I would assume people would pay 50-75% of what it cost you if you had bought these things OEM.

Good Luck,

I would say a good starting point would be 80% of cost. Yes I know it sucks, but it's like an automobile. The minute you drive it off the lot, the value takes a dive. The ATI card can not be an LE (unless a 7000 LE) because the original LE only had 32 MB.

OS might be a pain (ownership of the license). You might also have personal stuff on it, so a format might be in order.

Well, I guess it depends on who you are trying to sell it to. Obviously, this group is a pretty technical bunch, and has no problem building a machine, just like you did.

However, if you sell that computer to a person who knows nothing about computers, but wants the latest cool thing, you can get MORE than you paid for it because you put in the effort to get it working properly... Just some food for thought.

What you have listed is worth about $400 at most!

AMD 1700XP Processor: $65

256 MB DDR RAM (Micron): $60

64 MB ATI Radeon: $40

Soundblaster Live 5.1: $30

Windows 98SE: should come with it!

Maxtor 40 GB Hard Drive: $50

Sony DVD Drive: $35

Add in the case, mobo and PS and it's worth about $500 at most.

If you can get $500 for it I would say jump on it, it's only going to depreciate in value every day you have it!

Good Luck:)

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys. I just posted an add in the AVS Classifieds section. Like you advised, I was as specific as possible. I set a price of around 35% of what I paid, and I am willing to take offers. Thanks for your help!
