I just got word from the person who referred my in the "Refer A Friend" rebate program that the packing slip that I got from Mercata is not sufficient to serve as a receipt in order to get the rebate. As this is the only printed receipt that any of us got from Mercata, the obvious question is what receipt should we use?

The only immediate alternative that I can think of is to go into http://www.mercata.com and print the transaction history screen that lists the details of the Showstopper purchase, does anyone know if this will work?

I expect to be hearing from the rebate people soon myself as I used the packing slip for my $100 rebate.

I too purchased from Mercata and if you go into your account, there is a page you can get that says "This is Your Receipt" on it. This is what I intend to use when I apply for my $100 rebate. Been too busy to have gotten to it yet.

Will this suffice? I don't know for sure but I would think so.

You do realise that all the applications had to be in the mail by 10/15/2000 don't you? (ie, last weekend)

There's also been reports (myself and the person who referred me) of ReplayTV sending the postcard due to invalid serial numbers. When I called Replay directly to check my referee's serial number it matched exactly to what I had sent. So, there seems to be a breakdown in communication between replay and the rebate-house. I called and spoke to a Replay CSR who has passed the info onward at Replay. I hope this does not substantially delay the rebates. (I still haven't seen the $100 one yet).

The Tell-a-Friend was by 10/15/2000.

The $100 rebate for machines bought back circa Sept has a due date of 10/31/2000.

Like Valkyrie, my rebate also got kicked out for including an invalid serial number. And, like Valkyrie, the serial number I submitted has been confirmed to be correct.

Interestingly, the person whose information I submitted had his rebate rejected for not including a receipt. Of course, he did and has copies of everything he mailed to prove it.

It does indeed seem like the $50 "Refer a friend" rebate program is having many difficulties! I called Replay customer service for advice/help, and though friendly, they could not offer any assistance.

ReplayGuys - can you suggest a course of action? Thanks!

For those keeping score, I haven't heard anything about the $100 ReplayTV rebate, either (no money, no rejection).

Does anyone know how many rebates actually get fulfilled in general? Overall, I'd say that rebates suck. I will never buy a product expecting to receive a rebate. If two products are the same price and one has a rebate, I'll go with the better product regardless. They take so long to get fulfilled (if ever) and you usually have to rip pieces out of the box--how am I supposed to move it later on? Some even require the original receipt! Rebates are a marketing scam.

Cheers

So you're saying that the Mercata packing slip does not show proof of purchase (it does) or the part purchased (it also does) or the date purchased (or at least shipped, which is still in plenty of time). I hate to think what would happen if my local reseller's receipt weren't up to Replay's exacting standards.

There's nothing in PR's post that I disagree with, sorry to say. Surely it would be harder to fake a printed form that it would be to fake a web page, remembering that many of know how to write HTML.

Exactly, and as long as my two friends aren't referred by someone else (remember that their names and serial numbers have to match their registrations), then what's the problem? Are we trying to make sure they didn't steal a ReplayTV?

Now, I am really hoping I get my rebate without jumping through additional hoops, but enough with rebate programs with artificial barriers to entry. This is marketing at it's worst.

Well, good, then, according to your self-proclaimed expertise I should have no problems since I didn't participate in the Fatwallet chain.

Now, my question is, some people on this board did convince others on this board to buy one. So you have taken it upon yourself to deny them what is rightfully theirs? Nice.

Here's an update.

I called the rebate people at (877) 776 7624 and they said that my rebate is "in process" and that it hasn't been put on hold because of the Mercata receipt.

This leads me to believe that how your application gets processed depends on which operator happens to handle it. So, maybe yours will be processed just fine, maybe it won't. Not the most professional situation but there you go!

If you do get asked for your real receipt, just go to the Mercata web site and print the page showing the Showstopper transaction.

I talked to them yesterday because I got the invalid serial number postcard for the refer a friend thing. They said that there was a screw up at the rebate company and it was rejecting everyone that did the chain thing. They said they are working with the rebate company to fix the problem and get us the rebates. It is not a mercata receipt or wrong serial number problem. They are rejecting anyone who is both a referer and a referee. Hopefully they will do what they said and fix the error and we will see rebates soon.

If you mistakenly omitted any portion of the requirements on the first time around and got the "Sorry" card, there should be instructions on where to go from here. And, if all else fails, please call Customer Care at (800) 933-5899.

Not entirely true, Marc. I had a go-around with both ReplayTV and the "Rebate Center" yesterday. I got the postcard for the tell-a-friend rebate and called ReplayTV customer service. The CS person just wanted me to hang up rather than actually figure out what was wrong. I kept him on the line untul he agreed to check on the so-called "invalid" information and fix the info in the database. Unfortunately, I then took his word that I then needed to call the Rebate Center. 30 minutes on the phone waiting for a Rebate Center human to speak to me, only to find out that they no longer handle the t-a-f rebate. I then had to call ReplayTV CS again and go through it all over again. Finally, I was told to fax all the information in and that it would be taken care of. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/frown.gif

Well see.
