Dear friends,

Once again I come for your aid.

Which is would render the best audio quality? Using a RSX-1562 or a Denon 4520 as pre/pro?

It will replace a rsp-1098 + DVDO VP50pro

It will be used in conjunction with:

- RMB 1075 and RB 1080 (or an old Adcom 5800);
- BW Cm8, cmc2 and cm1 set;
- Velodyne sub;

Sources:

- Oppo 83SE;
- Sony BDP-CX960;
- Crestron ADMS (yes old).

This set will be used in a city apartment, its not my main system, and will be used 60% for Hires music and 40% for movies.

Thank you.

I like your enthusiasm but you are looking at two buggy units,imo. I would take the Rotel as I had two of those Denons, but if ya love music look maybe at the Anthem 3xx, 5xx 7xx. Even Harman Kardon would easily beat the 4520 for music. I had a 1068 with 1075 and 1095, the Denon is not even in the same universe for sound as the 1068 was. Good Luck.

Nice.

Its not really enthusiasm. I honestly love my 1098, the adcom was given to me a while ago. And i discovered it is a pretty nice, yet heavy, amp. The only problem is that ridiculous thump it makes when turned on...

However, in my pov technology moves, the 1098 and vp50pro while it is a nice combo, proved to be a bit buggy, especially since i use the vp50pro to enhance the image, but the audio is all processed via toslink or multi in by the rotel. This configuration is nice, but it creates some lipsync issues that cannot be corrected.

A few days go both the 4520 and the 1562 has been offered to me at a very very attractive price, of course the 4520 being cheaper.

I wanted a processor that could maintain a good sound quality, or better than the 1098 if possible.

Thats why I thought about the 1562, which would be used as pre/pro...

It would be nice to read more opinons, about this topic, i am very lost and i dont know what to do.

Thank you.

Nice!

Could you please now give me your opinion about sound quality?

Which will have better sound Denon 4520ci, RSX-1562, Marantz AV7702 or stay with my RSP-1098?

Please note that they will all be used as Pre/Pro with Rotel and/or Adcom Amps.

Thank you!

I would vote for the 7702. I'm not sure how important the latest features are. But I believe the 7702 would give you that and very good sound quality. Good luck :).

Hello Bill,

Thank you!

Well.. I do not mind the latest features, I have tried Audyssey in the past and I didnt like it. Not sure if I will try Auro or Atmos, funny story is that even without wanting it I already have an Atmos setup, with 5 floor speakers and 4 (actually 5) in-ceiling speakers... so thinking that way a natural way would be get an Atmos capable receiver.

However, in "ages past" when I bought the 1098 I remember that the sound quality using separates namely 1098+1075 or 1098+1095 was superior to any given receiver.

More recently, I had the chance to audition the 7005, and I ended up using the 4311ci as pre/pro. While the 4311ci was a nice processor the Rotel still had a more refined sound...

Now I had the Rotel fixed by an Authorized reseller, changed leaking caps, and everything, its brand new again, and working perfectly. I do enjoy the sound and its built quality, however I want a step further...

I have read so many bad things about the RSP-1570 and the RSX-1560 that I couldnt believe. I´ve heard the new Class D amps from Rotel and I didnt like either, something is missing there.. And for a few years, Rotel was dead for me, I thought the 1098 would be my last Rotel Processor.

Then, strangely, things happened.. A person offered me a brand new, in box RSX-1562, a reciever, that I thought about using it as pre-pro, since I HATED the D class amps.. But I could never ever find a thread of someone using it as a pre-pro!

And then the virus got me again, so funny... So many years passed, so many new technologies... But I am still in a audio-perfection quest. sigh... So many choices...

Thanks!

Hi Kate,

Seeing that you didn't care for the 4311 the Rotel would probably be your best choice. Don't let the fact that you haven't read about anyone using 1562 as a prepro stop you from trying it. If it has preouts then go for it! Good luck :).

Hello Bill,

Thank you very much for the encouragement, the Hi-Fi world is pretty intimidating, especially because due to prices being a bit high, and every mistake is a money loss.

I will test the 7702 and the 1562, use it as a pre-pro and let you know about my experience. I will not lie to you but the 1562 is being offered for almost 50% of the price of a 7702 thats why I am very inclined to get the Rotel.

Once again, thank you very much!

All Right!

I finally got the the RSX-1562 hooked up... And I am using it as a Pre-pro!

The RSP-1098 had a punchier sound, like... Stronger bass. The RSX-1562 is a bit more flat, but the channel separation is better!

The RSX-1562 give me the option to use 7.1 Front Height, the difference is subtle but sometimes, in some movies, the effect is pretty nice with DPLIIz.

I am having a *VERY* hard time to understand and use the Parametric EQ.

------

The Bad:

The OSD and Menu is pretty much the same as the RSP-1098, they only added a few colors, and it has the same quirks, like, occasionally some letters or words will disappear... And for this reason the OSD looks very ancient, deficient and old fashioned... I wish rotel could make a fancier looking GUI...

Not sure if it is my unit, but there is a loud POP on the subwoofer channel, when it switches between sound modes, or even when I press pause, stop or any operation that will interrupt the sound. and yes it is a VERY loud POP...

It seems that the HDMI is only switching, there is no processing!

The sound is less punchy, when compared to 1098.

The USB is ridiculous, there is no FLAC support!

The Good thing:

Being able to use the PLIIz is fun!

It seems that the channel separation is better.

The remote control is easier to use, however, I do not use the original remote, its hooked to my home automation, so I just tested the remote, but I dont use it.

-----

Overall, Im pretty satisfied, the only thing I need to research is if I can hook the VP50Pro into the system...

So it would be... Sources -> RSX-1562 -> VP50Pro -> Darbeelet

Thanks!

You shouldn't be getting large pops in the subwoofer channel when you change AVR settings.
Check to make sure the AVR's software is up to date.
If it is, then report the problem to Rotel.

OK!

Thank you very much all!

LAST question please...

Should I keep the VP50Pro in my system? I know its kinda old, but since Rotel HDMI is only switching i was thinking of ... using the DVDO after the Rotel..

SO...

Sources -> RSX-1562 -> DVDO VP50Pro

Cant do the other way around because VP50pro cannot passthru hi-def/lossless audio codecs
