Receiver close to $100?

1575 Views 35 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  MrHT
I know 100-200 (hopefully closer to 100 including shipping)is almost nothing to spend on a receiver but I am on a tight budget. I need virtually no features on this device, I really only use a ps3 for everything, and do not plan on cranking it up all too loud. I have already decided on a Jamo 5.1 but am unsure of the reciever, I have been looking at the ymc-500 becuase of the price but it does look really underpowered, but I really cannot break from this budget. Any advice at all is appreciated!

Don't have a recommendation for you, but if you are in So Cal, I got a JVC 5.1 receiver for that money... used about a yr.

Is it worth an extra 100 to go for that onkyo 309? I just do not know enough about receivers, it would be paired with the jamo a340pdd.3, but anything 200 and under I am open to suggestions. I am pretty set on not getting a HTIB, but I know my price range is very limited.

sorry looking for something a little newer, but any suggestions?
The Onkyo 309 would be my choice...can be had for $200 new at both Amazon and Newegg.

I would save a little more and go with this...

If you are patient, you might pick the 509 up for around $230 or so...
Here you go. For what it is, it works...if it does enough FOR YOU...

Buy one...

I was wondering if anyone has one of these and could tell us what it is like?

Thanks.

If you got $300 to spend get a denon avr-1611 it is far superior to the onkyo 309

Where do you live? We can check Craigslist for deals.

I live in Virginia and can either look through Richmond or Charlottesville

You could also check Costco.

My local one has the Pioneer VSX-820-K for $198.

Great return policy at Costco if you don't like it.

But if you really need to stick near $100, then the Yamaha deal, a used unit off of Craigslist/eBay or a refurbed unit from ShopOnkyo.

Labor Day is coming up. ShopOnkyo should have at least 10% off plus another $10 for joining (free) Club Onkyo.

Oh, and you might check out your local electronics stores for floor models, closeouts, etc.

I guess my big question is, how much will I notice a difference from a onkyo 309 or the 820-k (Thanks bladerunner6 for the idea!) to the yamaha, yamaha is clearly the inferior unit, but its half price. When I plug in one verse the other to watch a movie what are the major differences I will hear? Just getting really bogged down in a lot of specs, but its hard to translate that to what I actually need.

I am not the most versed person, but I do think that the Pioneer and the Yammie have room equalization software where the 309 doesn't. That probably might make the most difference.

I hope someone of greater expertise will chime in on this.

Get this receiver and you'll be much happier than you would with the Onkyo 309 or Yamaha YMC-500.

It has two HDMI inputs, Audyssey 2EQ room calibration and more power than either of those two receivers. And its only $75. Perfect for your needs.

I really hope so too, I see things like 10% THD which is an audible difference vs less than 1% which isn't, but I also understand these ratings are made when the unit is pushing its limits. I really am interested in will the yamaha be way too weak paired with my specific speakers, and will I be able to hear the difference in a $100 dollar way. Sorry for all the questions guys i've just been researching this stuff for so long, mostly reading the forum, and thought I should just post myself.

I trust you! and for 75 dollars that looks great!

Does the year it is made just not make that much of a difference, out of curiosity? And I will not experience any problems hooking up modern things?
Have you bought the speakers yet? If not you might want to drop back and punt and wait until more funds are available Maybe something like a pair of audio engine A5s for 199 bucks that can run off a rca analog output. Its only two channel.

If you want separates, then consider just buying as much speaker (in quality not size) as you can afford now in two channel. Buy a used reciever and you'll have better 2 channel sound. You can always add other channels later. Spread this out somewhat and in the long run end up with a better system. The first two speakers you buy could eventually become surrounds for better fronts later down the road.
