Receiver decision...

904 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Filthy McNasty
With a lot of help from everyone on here I was able to get a very nice sound system for my living room.

I bought two Polk Audio R50 speakers from Outpost, an RCA CD changer from Overstock, and a Sherwood RD-6500 receiver from Circuit City. I also have a Roku device I ordered from them directly to let me bring the musinc from my Yahoo Unlimited subscription on my PC to the stereo wirelessly with control in the living room.

One item I am not so sure on at this time is the Sherwood receiver. The sound is crisp as far as I can tell and I do have exceptional hearing at high ranges however there isn't enough simple sound adjustment for my taste and the remote really can't utilize a lot of features for adjustment. That said before I return it and get something different I wanted to chack with people on a few things.

First, do other brands offer better sound adjustments that are easier like bass and treble? If so is there something in the same range that would be a good receiver. I paid $159.99 for mine at the store.

Second. Ther Sherwood is 100w per channel and seems to drive the speakers very well to the point of being plenty loud. I heard Onkyo receivers are really good for power but noticed they are only 65 watts per channel on the 303 model. Will that be enough?

I want a 5.1 receiver (or 6.1, 7.1) because it gives me upgrade options later on. Although I do not plan on adding rear channel speakers I would like to add a subwoofer soon as well as a possible center channel but not sure. I know if I do I will get more volume just because I will have more speakers thus taking advantage of the wattage available on the other channels.

So what are your thoughts on my receiver and possibly getting a different one? Am I missing something in the manual about the adjustments and how to tweak the sound? Input is much appreciated.

Thanks again everyone!

WOW! I just bought a Yamaha HTR-5930 at Best Buy and there is a HUGE difference! The Sherwood is definitely going back to Circuit City and this one is here to stay.

The Yamaha is 110w per channel and that shouldn't make a huge difference however the guy at Best Buy was saying that the front speakers are on indepentant amps instead of one and it certainly is MUCH louder and the sound is more crisp. Plus I have treble and bass adjustments from the unit.

Although it comes with a "universal remote" that isn't a big plus because it can't control my Oritron DVD or my Insignia TV.

Certainly would recommend it!
Oritron, Insignia, not to be sarcastic, but you must have furnished your entire home theater for under $500.
It won't matter how much it cost him as long as he'e happy.
OK, so the TV is Insignia, it works great and I can see it just fine. As for the DVD player, it is cheap, I know that. Hell I paid like $15 for it. Factor in that it plays a disc and puts out a good picture on the screen and it doesn't really matter. I may upgrade it later on but honestly since I don't have HD then this all works.

Oh, and my system cost:

$180.00 - 2 Polk Audio R50 speakers with shipping from Outpost

$50.00 - Refurbished RCA 5 disc changer from Overstock

$15.00 - Oritron DVD player

$180.00 - Insignia 27" TV set

$200.00 - Yamaha HTR-5930 receiver from Best Buy

----------------------------------------------------

$625.00 Total cost with shipping and sales tax

All in all that isn't bad at all and it works great.

Wow. After a few posts here I can see that some of the people here just want to brag about how much they spent on their system or rag on someone who spent less.

Yes, I spent less, and I got something that works great and sounds great. Not only that but I came out here and told everyone what I had and spent so others might gain knowledge from my purchases and maybe show other new people in the community out here that you can get away for less.

Not everyone needs to spend a boat load of cash like some do, to each his or her own.

This is true.

Don't be so presumptuous. You got a system that makes you happy and that's great. Everyone on this site can find a $25 DVD player and a $150 TV, but you haven't shown anyone here what you can get away with for less.

For example:

Does your DVD player cost less AND have the video/audio quality of a $200 unit, or does it just cost less?

Can your TV accept a high definition input?

In a nutshell, have you found a way to save money and acheive the same results without spending 2x/3x/etc, or have you just cut corners?

Or else just plain jealous - ie: wish they had the same ears as you

So what's your next shopping adventure? Walk into into a BMW dealership and brag about how your $50 Yugo has 4 tires and a steering wheel - just like almost every Bimmer does?
