Receiver for Athena Point MKII?

679 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Pablonius
Sorry, I'm a bit of a noob. I know everyone's talking about really good high end stuff but I don't know much about any of this. I've got a set of Athen Point MK II speakers and a Dayton subwoofer. I don't know what receiver might be too crappy or more than what I need to drive these speakers. Not too pricey either. Any suggestions? They'll be used for music and movies.

You need to tell us how much you want to spend.

oops, sorry  would $300 be too low? that's my max budget right now.
Onkyo and Pioneer are excellent receivers in this price range. Pioneer has the vsx-516 and 816 in this price range and are both excellent. I have the vsx-516 matched with the point 5s and love the sound. Harman Kardon would also be a good pick for a receiver if you can find one that fits your budget. Eather of those 3 would be a good match with Athena. Yamaha also makes a good receiver but is sometimes not prefered matched with Athenas because it produces a brighter sound...that's personal preference though.

$300.00 isn't to low for a quality receiver matched with your speakers and sub. All of the above should have receivers within the $200 to $300 range and will work great. With a little searching finding a sale you might find one below $200. Match the features and the connections you need with a receiver from one of the above compaines and you should be very satisifsfied with the sound. Much better than any HTIB you could have gotten anywhere near the price range.
thank you for the pointers, i'll check out the pioneer you mentioned. my ears don't handle brightness too well so the yamaha i guess is out. looking forward to the day i have my first setup, just need the receiver (and cables :) )

No Problem, I also would suggest Parts Express or monoprice for cables. I haven't persnally used monprice but they have a good following in this forum for quality at good prices. I've personally used Parts Express and they have great quality and the best prices I've found. I would recommend figuring out exactly what cables you need and order them all at once to save on shipping. You're going to pay the same shipping(at least with partsexpress) if you just order 1 cable or more, it's a good deal if you get them all at once.
I have the pioneer vsx816 with the Athena Point MK II's and the AS-P4000 subwoofer and am very pleased with the sound. Also the pioneer is very easy to setup with on screen display and the autocalibration and acoustic equalization. I purchased mine at bestbuy and if you have one near you, they may have one hooked up that you could audition or at least tinker with. Good luck with your purchase.

I also ordered my cables and wiring from monoprice and I recommend them for low prices and quick service.

Good luck :)
