Receiver for watching sports in garage

282 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  head_unit
I have a 'home office' in my garage. Which basically means I have a desk, shelves & a painted wall.

I've decided to add a projector, receiver and soundbar... for primarily viewing sports with a few buddies that I don't want to let into my living room.

Any recommendations for receivers? (no sound proofing, not a true home theater setup)

I'd like to keep the cost of projector, receiver, soundbar in the neighborhood of 3K total.

Thanks Everyone!

My recommendation is to get new friends.

Wow. Is this just to keep the spillage, burns, and various broken items inside to a minimum?:D Are you OK with Craigslist? Couple hundred for a decent receiver and speakers(soundbar). Maybe mount a basic 65-75in tv on the wall? Do the boys get to go inside when the urge hits? :)
A receiver... for a sound bar...?

Honestly 80 inch to 86 inch televisions can be found under $2500. You don't need a receiver. Then just get a decent soundbar if the sound from the tv isn't adequate. For your non light controlled dusty garage a projector would be a horrible idea. You would have a lot more options for repurposing the television later on than a projector. For a projector to be done right it require a lot more time energy and thought than many people wish to invest.

Well.. the projector will 'project' at a retractable screen over my dry erase whiteboard. I need the whiteboard, so I can't sacrifice the space to a TV.

it's a 3 car garage that uses the single car stall as an office. The garage door doesn't have any windows so it stays dark.

I was basically just saying it's a garage so no one recommends a receiver that's well out of budget.

but... I still need a receiver.

thoughts?
Soundbar? No way to fit actual speakers? I don't go around listening to sound bars, but me and a friend did end up spending a lot of time with this
https://www.cambridgeaudio.com/usa/en/products/tv-sound/tvb2
and were really surprised at how nice it sounded, playing stuff from Jeff Beck at Ronny Scott's to Clapton's Guitar Festival. There is a version 2 out now. I've seen either at good discounts. The bar is actual metal, the sub is not going to break your windows but sounded good.

Generally, sound bars are powered, so no need for a receiver.
BUT very few TVs have variable audio output. Unless you enjoy fiddling with multiple remotes, I very highly recommend to get a TV where the remote's volume can also control the level of the audio out/headphone jack. That requires some digging to find that feature-used to be just Vizio and Sony but I haven't checked in a while; dunno about Hisense, TCL etc.
