Receiver power

402 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Billped
How much receiver watts per channel is really needed in a 5.1 system with speaker sensitivity of around 89db and a separate powered sub? Isn't most of the power needed for the lower frequencies which the sub takes care of seperately?

Thanks

Depends on a lot of things. How big is your room? Does it open to other areas in your house? What type of music material do you listen to? How big is your powered sub? Do you like to listen to stuff loud? Etc, etc. But remember one thing, power and dB output is logrithmic. As you increase dB levels you need more and more power to achieve an increases of 1 dB. It's not a linear relationship.

For every 3dB increase in volume you need twice the power.

... and to bridge the gap between measurements and perception, it takes 10X the power to equal double the *perceived* volume since 1Bel = double the perceived volume, 10dB=1B, and 2^(10/3) ~ 10.

Mathematically yours,
