Receiver recommendation?

835 Views 5 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  tygger
Hi, I took advantage of that newegg sale on the MartinLogans recently and got 2 Motion12s. I don't plan to get a center speaker or subwoofer (I'm in a highrise condo). Now I have to get a receiver. What's the best bang for my buck if I want to spend at most $500?

Do you really need a receiver? (Aka are you really going to be listening to the radio?) If you're just going to be running 2 channel, why not look into an integrated amp? You might want to look at the Yamaha A-S500. Or maybe even a NAD 725BEE or a Rotel RA-1520 (both of which are a bit above the price range you're looking at.) The Arcam a90 on ebay right now might not be a bad choice either.

I think we need to know more about what you're wanting. If you're wanting something with HDMI switching or video scaling, then you're going to want something completely different than an integrated amp.
Pioneer vsx-1021-k, great price at amazon.com right now.

ysu2008,

Jump back onto Newegg immediately!! Yamaha rx-v867-MSRP'd at 699, right now at Newegg $454. and with coupon code $55 off w/ promo code EMCKBJD65, ends 8/22. That makes it $399 delivered. !!!!
Ends tonight at midnight.

I am chimeing in as I am convinced that for that money and decent L/R's you'll not miss much by leaving out the center channel with this kind of Yamaha. Excellent DSP, especially in small/medium rooms as I've got in my den. I run two Paradigms (Atoms) with a sub for a 2.1 system, and the old Yamaha I've got there just makes it all sing. Center action and dialog happens right on the screen, and there is much more than a hint of the surround effects for the viewer, even without surround speakers. The Yamaha did great with just the two Atoms, without the sub. Yamaha does some good stuff at the MSRP level above @ $400. 40% off is a killer deal on a quality unit.

Good luck on your choices. Be happy.

Is the Pioneer 1021 going to have enough juice for the ML12? Aren't they 4 ohm speakers?

I'd want a receiver with preouts in case I had to add an amp later.
I'd like to hear recommendations also... at my local bb, they were using a Pioneer VSX-50 for the demo.
