I know there are several threads about this but I don't know enough about receivers to answer my own questions.


I'm moving into an apartment in a few months and I need advice for an adequate

The Monitor 50 and 60 have 89-90db sensitivity, that's pretty good. Doesn't take a powerful receiver to make them play loudly. If the sensitivity was 83-85 I'd see your point, but 90db is above average. Generally only Klipsch or other speakers with horn tweeters have higher ratings in the mid 90's and above.


That said I don't like the Yamaha 465 because the build quality looks cheap. It weighs about 4-5 lbs less than last years model it replaced plus it uses cheap spring clip terminals for the center and surround speakers. For $400 or less you can get a Denon 1610, 1910, Pioneer 919, Onkyo 607 or RC160 and if you wait until the weekend, you can get the Yamaha RX-V765 for $399 from newegg.com which would be much better than the 465.

Is the Denon AVR590 the same as the AVR1610? How much of a difference would the 120w/ch Pioneer 919 make vs the 75w/ch on the Denon, assuming the ratings are accurate.

There seems to be no discernable differences between the 590 and the 1610. Check out the side by side and compare them. Right now at Amazon the 1610 is a bit cheaper than the 590.

Pioneer seems to be inflating their power specs lately - but the difference between 75 and 110 wpc isn't a wide gulf. Look for features you want and need and don't put too much stock in the power specs.

Seeing as its a pretty small room, I'll probably go with the Monitor 50's and possibly a sub. The Denon AVR1610 and Pioneer 919 both have more than enough inputs and all of the features that I want and need. Which would you pick? Are there any general facts about Denon/Pioneer receivers that could put one above the other?

Even though your comparison charts shows everything is the same, if you look at the back of each receiver you'll notice the 1610 has TWO SETS of front speaker terminals, A & B. The 590 only has Speaker A terminals.


That's the lone difference I can see between two receivers. Power, inputs, specs, etc are the same. Go for the one with the lowest price unless you need the B speaker terminals to play music on the patio or something. it has to be the same source as the main room though.


By the way the 1610 can be had under $300 shipped if you buy from Electronics Expo and use AUDIOSALE promo code at checkout. Electronics Expo is an authorized Denon dealer too!


As far as 919 vs 1610, the 919 is 7.1 receiver with Zone 2 output. You can watch a movie in one room and listen to a different source in another room like the tuner, CD, etc. Plus the 919 has an iPod connection and comes with the cable.

Thanks for all of the help. I'm going to go with the 1610 because having 2 Zone audio isn't really a feature that I'll use and i can just plug my ipod in through one of the inputs. Also, the Pioneer 919 is 100 dollars more.

Thanks - I knew there had to be a difference but the spec sheet wasn't giving up that difference.

The 1610 has more real power than the 919. The 919's power consumption comes in at 290W and the Denon's at 516W. The 919 does have nice Ipod integration and a slicker GUI if that does anything for you.
