I'm not sure what to calibrate speaker levels with anymore. I have them calibrated using AVIA's tones at the moment, but when I checked the levels using my receiver's test tones, most of the receivers seemed to show differences of around 1db.

I know that everyone loves AVIA, but in this kind of situation, would it make more sense for me to recalibrate using the receiver's internal tones instead.

Theoretically, the signal path from the DVD to the player to the cable to the receiver could add some variable to the test tone. What may be more likely is that the ambient noise from one calibration session to the other has changed. That may explain why they seem a bit different.

When I was calibrating I found it virtually impossible to control for all sound that was being picked up by my Rat Shack meter.

Avia is referenced for 85db and your internal test tone could be for 75db. The 1db difference could be the 10db difference in the reference point.
