Receiver upconversion

It's upgrade time. I have added a Motorola QIP6416-2, next comes a Panasonic BD30 and finally a new receiver. This means the component cables go south and HDMI's come on board. I will need 3 HDMI in, FIOS, DVD and Mac. Then a component in for the aged tapes which will be converted over the next few years. We keep the tapes, VHS, no question about that - and a way to play them. Here is my question:

My current receiver, a Sony DE898, upconverts all video to component. It has no HDMI however. Do modern HDMI 1.3 receivers upconvert analog input to HDMI digital?

I have a front projection system and this would allow ONE cable to the projector, and HDMI cable. The projector supports multiple inputs but the room in which all this is installed has a non-accessible ceiling, so I have stick-em-on plastic wire conduits to reduce the ugliness of cables. If I run a component AND an HDMI to the projector I'll need a new conduit run which is best avoided. So if I can run all inputs via HDMI it is all to the good.

Thanks - Lawrence

Hi Lawrence,

All 1.3 receivers that I'm aware of upconvert to HDMI out. You can go 'up' to HDMI, just not down from HDMI to component.

I'm using an Integra 9.8 with a FIOS Motorola 6416.

There have been several mentions in the HDTV threads about artifacts showing up with the Motorola 6416 using HDMI. This is one reason I use component out of the 6416 to the Integra. The Integra upconverts to 1080p over HDMI to Sony tv. The other reason I use component is that I had handshake issues with HDMI out of 6416. I wanted HD to come out 1080i and SD to come out 480i, then let the Integra upconvert accordingly. When I used HDMI from 6416, the output was reset to 720p after handshake on a pretty consistent basis. No problems/artifacts after using component to Integra.

I have the BD30 as well and in passes 1080p24 through Integra to TV. Works great.

Don't have a projector so I can't speak to that.

Thanks Mike, that is what I had hoped. And glad to see that issues with the 6416 can be fixed the way you say, I just got mine yesterday (an upgrade from my original FIOS non-DVR box) and other than the blasted hard disk does not seem to spin down - with corresponding noise, although very low - it seems fine so far.

Thanks - Lawrence
