do you have really good sounding speakers?

while that may seem like a "wise guy" response, it isn't.

HAH! that's great. And, he's right, too. Seriously, to the OP, that's too vague a question. But, here's one answer: any 7.1 AVR can be a 5.1 AVR if you simply neglect to plug in the two back surround speakers.

Great, good speakers make the biggest difference. Now, I would just come up with a budget, then look for the best AVR within that budget. I wouldn't worry too much about "wasting money" on 7.1 when you only plan to go with 5.1, just focus on the the best AVR within your budget. Also, focus more on the sources for your system (DVD, Blu Ray, Cable/Sat box, do you need HDMI, audio over HDMI, etc...). That will have a big impact on what price point you arrive at...

Thanks for the response guys, I really appreciate it. I had a bad experence with the Pioneer 919 didn't sound good at all. My 8 year old Technics sounded much better. Looking to spend around $400.00 to $500.00. Again I am not looking for something with a lot of features.

If it were my money, I'd pick up a Denon AVR790 and be done with it. The Onkyo 607 is also a popular choice in this price range. But, while you can't tough the Onkyo for features, reliability is an issue in my experience, and the Denon seems much more solid.
