receivers: what to expect in 2011?

aside from newer sound/video processing, more HDMI inputs, more wattage, better OSD, the big thing that 2010 brought us was HDMI 1.4.

can we expect more of the same in 2011, e.g. incremental changes?

i would venture to guess we'll see more streaming - possibly even netflix from an avr.

maybe even a receiver to perform 2d to 3d conversion.

going to be harder to make big strides in audio alone
Supposedly(!) DTS Neo:X post-processing expansion technology will finally appear "first in flagship AVRs" in the first half of 2011 . . . and presumably only from CEMs that don't offer Audyssey DSX!

Trickle down tech from more expensive receivers such as better VP for lower receivers.

More network features; I would expect more receivers to have Pandora or some such

Be nice to see more adoption of Dolby Volume, or similar tech.

Possibly, but only possibly, more receivers with class D (but so far, not a lot of mfg's jumping on the bandwagon)
I was going to mention that tech too. Seems to early to tell if it will become relevant.
Many guys in this forum secretly wish for AVRs to adapt "technology" from the Mercury Mistress:

I agree with pretty much everything except the more wattage ratings. The new receivers seem to be concentrating more on bells and whistles and skimping on the amp section.

The wattage will increase as Class D solutions become more commonplace as they are more cost-effective watts per $..

Also the unit's form factor will shrink as well..

Just my $0.02...

First i've heard of this standard.

So is HDMI going to be obsolete soon and this take its place?

I was still waiting for displayport to become commonplace.

To really shrink the form factor, they're going to have to get rid of some of the connections on the back. Which we surely will see happen over time. Whether there's a significant loss of legacy connections in 2011, we'll have to wait and see . . .

I hope that these higher wattage Class D amplifiers will put out credible numbers at 4 ohms

I think this needs to come with warning, not to play at work. I was not sure where it was going, but I decided wherever it was, it was not good to bring it up at work.

I would make no assumptions about it, yet. Maybe it will replace HDMI, maybe not.

Display Port has made no inroads into the consumer AV market. Not sure it ever will.

And when will this occur? Manufactuers have had plenty of time to go this route, and haven't. Going to say not to expect much change in 2011, unless you know something I don't.
