A friend of mine has a Cyberhome 300s that I think is the same or similar to the Coby model. It has component out and works after several years of use. I guess that counts as legit. That's about all I can say about it.
There are also house brands like Durabrand, Tru-Tech and Insignia that seem to have very similar players in the $25-40 range.
I also found an RCA DRC200N that I think was around $40 (although I got it for $17 because it was a return and had no remote.) It's about 11" wide. I don't know if you can find those anymore, though.
As for cables, Monoprice.com has them for like around $5.
