I don't care about compressed music enhancers, 3 zone control, wi-fi connections, blah blah blah, etc. I only want the best sound quality available for the $1500 (preferably less) for movies (Bluray so it must have newest decoders) and TV (don't care about 2 channel listening- got that covered). I have owned the Denon 3803 (great punch/ lively but grainy) Pio Elite 92TXH (smoother/ better fidelity than Denon but loses that punch some), Onkyo SR705 (lifeless), so I am looking for a step up. I am not opposed to separates if I can afford it. I guess I want smooth and punchy with fidelity- does that make any sense? Maybe that translates into tight/full bass with clear mids and uppers. Using Energy RC's all around.

I just purchased a Marantz SR6003, HIGHLY recommend it, upgraded from that Onkyo. This has to be on your short list.

I'm about even on Music/HT/Games. Music was the biggest upgrade, but the difference it can be heard in all aspects

Does the 6003 have anything other than some extra features that makes it a better choice over the 5003 (which has all the decoders I need) like better amps or something that improves sound quality?

FWIW I just ordered a 6003.It's rated for 70 watts more then the 5003 so there must be some difference somewhere.Whether it's the same, better or worse sounding I couldn't say.Someone posted some unsubstantiated claims over in the dedicated thread about some possibly upgraded parts in the 6003 but that's not why I bought it.I bought for the door. That's right I paid 150 bucks for a FREAKIN' DOOR.

I have a Marantz SR5002 powered by an Emotiva 125 watt per channel LPA-1 amp. The receiver has performed flawlessly. I paid $700 for the receiver eight months ago, and picked up the LPA-1 for $399 as B-stock around the same time.

The only thing I am missing out on is Audyssey. The newer model SR5003 has this feature. However, I am not so sure Audyssey is all it's cracked up to be. It seems the majority of the people who do use it, spend most of their time tweaking it.

Thats funny, I spoke with a guy in the dealer that traded his 5003 for a 6003 and was pleased with the result. I belive he said the sound was a bit more dyanmic, and just sounded fuller.

Also, A guy in one of these forums has a list of why it was better. (different Amp section, some DAC feature...)

This could be BS, but the dealer said he also had another guy traded up for the 6003 and was pleased he did.

Given the fact that you can find the 6003 for the same price as the 5003 (or better from some sites) and it looks better IMO, why not go with it.
