Looking for recommendations on a stereo receiver in the $1000 price range. I currently have an
early 90's Pioneer VSX-4800. I would like the same or better music quality. Thanks.

Denon X3700. Even if you don't use the other channels, this will be a higher fidelity and more cost effective solution than any stereo only solution in that price range that I am aware of.

Key benefits are proper bass management, independent dual subwoofer outputs, and very capable sub and speaker eq. In other words, it has all the required fundamentals for high fidelity, other than well designed speakers and subs. Also will probably have equal or better power than similarly priced stereo only gear.

Yamaha R-N803
this one gets great reviews.

What are your source devices, media formats, etc.

If you don't need any modern ports you could look for one of the late 90's or early 2000's THX Heavyweights. I've got a couple of those beasts and love their sound quality and power. I just run Echo Dots to them if I wanna use Bluetooth and Wifi.
Denon DRA-800H.

@Danny_555 yes agree with fishx65, my sacramento craigslist is full of old Denon 38xx and 58xx models being given away since they don't have hdmi. They were all heavy powerful beasts with excellent amps and the entire back panel is full of every analog input you could think of. I still use my Integra gear from 2002 in my main room because it is rock solid, great sound, full analog inputs and preouts plus no hdmi to mess with, I am going to join the 21st century soon, the Integra will move into the bar for 2 channel vinyl.

Are you looking strictly for a stereo receiver for music only or a multi-channel home theater receiver for movies that uses a 5.1 or more speaker setup?
There are 2 channel A/V receivers but like other people said they're mostly above (Arcam) or below (Denon, Marantz) your price point. Buying a surround AVR and running it in stereo is probably your best bet.

Marantz for sure. Had an Pioneer Elite series and moved to Marantz. The change in sound quality was astounding.

I recently bought this for a second system. It sounds good. My main system is 2ch stereo has a $9400 amp/pre so I have a good reference for my opinion.
Question above of what you are using for speakers and what sources you wish to use may matter in these recommendations.
