Recommendations for "visually oriented" AV receiver

763 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Joe_M
All,

I'm in the market for a receiver.

Unlike many here, I don't really care that much about legacy inputs. I have 3 HDMI devices, 1 component device, and maybe 1 old SVideo connection.

I don't need multizone.

What I WOULD like the unit to do is handle HDMI switching well, and let the receiver do all the audio processing. Ideally, I'd like the unit to have 1 HDMI cable that runs up to my plasma, and that's it. All the rest of the cabling stays down in the entertainment center.

If possible, I'd like Ethernet on the receiver to manage and stream internet radio and stuff. If not, then I can use an Airport Express.

It's a small room, so power isn't that important. But, the UI is. The easier it is to use, the better. And, I'd really like the interface to be as polished as possible.

I'd like to spend as little as possible, but I could go up to $2k for the "perfect" solution.

What do you guys think? Any recommendations? I'd like to buy this this week.

Hi William.

I was in the same boat with an HDMI 'only' setup so I selected the Sony DA5200ES. So far I an quite happy with the unit paired with KEF Q-series speakers, PS3, Oppo 981HD, and a Sony LCD--all via HDMI @ 1080p.

If you are able to wait a little while, nearly all the manufacturers have really interesting units in the pipeline. But for now it looks like the 5200ES has the stellar GUI.

Cheers!

I can't speak to any of these from a UI standpoint. The one thing they all have is 3 HDMI inputs. Almost all receivers have a lot of legacy connections. Seems like it's taking a while to get rid of those.
