Recommendations/thoughts on replacing JBL PB12 Sub

1150 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Pannymeister
I am considering replacing my JBL-PB12 sub. I have sifted through 1000's of posts trying to find anyone in a similar situation to no avail. I even read the entire craigsub thread (thanks craig).

I guess what I'm wondering is if there are others in this forum who have had the same sub and then moved on, specifically to either the SVS's or the HSU's, and if it was really worth the extra money. Feel free to comment even if you never owned the sub but are familiar with it.

My current setup is as follows:

Room size 26x14x7

AVR - Yamaha RXV-800 5.1 100wpc

JBLS310 fronts

JBL Center

JBL S26 surrounds

This is a dedicated theater in the basement - solid concrete walls, 2x4 framing (insulated) isolated an inch or so away from the concrete, covered with real paneling. There is also an opening about 4' wide, which will probably be covered with cloth of some sort, but may end up getting double doors.

The floor was just carpeted with outdoor carpeting (due to a slight water problem at certain times) and this seems to have stolen the PB12's thunder a bit, though this could have also been a result of a change in the placement.

Anyhow, any relevant feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't heard the PS-12, but I have had the E250P sub in my home. It belonged to a friend of mine.

He picked it up on ebay for $80, and wanted me to tell him what I thought. I listened to it, and told him once he had $600, run, not walk, and get a 20-39Pci from SVS. He did, and he couldn't be happier.

He had a 15x40 basement, and hasn't even mentioned upgrading since he got his SVS. It plays loudly with low distortion, and has a more tactile feel than that JBL.

Thanks in advance.

If you want a cylinder sub the SVS 20-39PCi is a very good sub, especially a B-Stock unit.

If you prefer something that is less conspicuous, the Outlaw LFM-1 Plus is a great buy at $499 plus shipping.

All the Best
Except that mine is downfiring. Looking at some of the reviews it got on Amazon (thanks for the link) it appears it has very similar sonic characteristics as well.

Thanks for the input - it sounds like moving on will be worthwhile.

Spyboy, it appears this is now discontinued. Otherwise it didn't look like a bad sub for the money with the exception that it only gets down to 25.

I'm looking for something that gets a bit lower. After reading through the craigsub thread, I kinda narrowed it down to either the 3.3 HO or maybe the PB12 NSD, but I'm leaning more towards the 3.3 as it is said to be more musically adept. I'm wondering though if maybe for my room that may be a bit of overkill.

Thanks
You're looking at teh wrong one. you are referring the the old LFM-1. The LFM-1 Plus is on sale for $499, you have to add it to your cart to see the price. And you can get 2 for $949.

The LFM-1 Plus has variable tuning @ either 18 Hz or 25 Hz.

Correct you are indeed. Thanks for pointing that out.

How does the outlaw compare to the HSU's I wonder. Seems like it may have been brought up in the craigsub thread, but there were so damn many posts and I was pretty tired I forget. If its anything close performance wise then it looks like a good deal.
The Outlaw subs are designed by Dr. Hsu. They just change them a bit to stand out. But the LFM-1 Plus is the equivalent of teh VTF3.2, which was considered a class leading sub up until 6 months ago.
Looks like a lot of sub for the dough. I may just pull the trigger on this one, but I'll do a little more investigation first..

That review from AV Revolution was very positive, and the fact that Dr Hsu himself has had a hand in this says a lot. I just wonder why there weren't more reviews for it. I'll poke around here on the forums a bit.

Thanks again for the input - it's really appreciated.
