I'm planning on picking up the Onkyo 706 and I'm looking for advice on a speaker set to go with it. I've browsed around a little but I'm not even really sure what to be looking for.

Would something like the Klipsch Quintet be a good start? Or am I better off selecting individual speakers? If I go with the Klipsch Quintet, what other speakers should I use to fill out the 7.1? I'm hoping to spend less than 1k on the speakers + sub, even if that means going 5.1 for now with an upgrade in the future. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apparently the best way to purchase speakers is to go to your tool box and grab a level. Then go through speaker by speaker and pull up the FR charts, stick that level right up to your monitor and look for the flattest graph.

The winner = flattest line, that you can afford.

Who knew it was so easy?? I really wish I knew this method when I bought my speakers. Apparently my friend, who knows nothing about speakers, managed to purchase a far better set than mine for much less money. It only took him a few hours to decide on the best set with this method. A pretty fool-proof method for buying speakers, especially considering that my friend is deaf.

Anyone have actual help?

I did this in another thread and this would be similar.

Based on my good experience with Polk Audio speakers, I would suggest the following speaker setups at clearance pricing to consider:

2 Polk Audio RTi8 for $199.00 each + $41.60 shipping = 2 x $241.59 =$483.18

1 Polk Audio CSi5 for $249.00 each + $31.81 shipping = $281.80
http://www.jr.com/polk-audio/pe/POK_CSI5_hy_BK/

2 Polk Audio RTi4 for $179.99 pair + $10.99 shipping = $190.98
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107RTI4...sh.html?tp=186

Total = $955.96

OR

2 Polk Audio RTi12 for $369.99 each + $108.54 shipping = 2 x $478.53 = $957.07
http://www.jr.com/polk-audio/pe/POK_RTI12_hy_BK/

1 Polk Audio CSi5 for $249.00 each + $31.81 shipping = $281.80

Total = $1722.05

These do not include a sub. Most suggest checking out the internet sites for hsuresearch or AV123 or edesignaudio.

Many also recommend the BIC Acoustech H-100, Polk PSW505, or the Dayton SUB-120 HT or 100 HT for consideration.

If you can, it is really best to try and listen to the speakers before purchasing them. Unfortunately this is not always possible or practical for everybody. I would encourage you to read some speaker reviews for the speakers you are interested in. There are many worthwhile comments to read in this forum.

Hope this helps a little.

Do you have any friends or family with a set up you can listen to?

People's tastes vary so widely over what is "best" in audio, it will be better if you do your own listening research as much as possible.

It would be helpful if you could visit multiple a/v shops and listen to everything you can possibly demo.

Once you have some idea of what kind of sound you like, then you can throw some specifics beyond just budget at the forum and likely get some better help.

Happy hunting...
