Do DVD recorders match a stand alone players playback quality?

I can't see any difference between the two on my 32" Sony TV. Perhaps people with HDTV Plasma sets can see a difference? The main reason people use a cheap player is to save wear and tear on their high priced DVD recorder.

Dave
Is there a shoot-out report about standalone DVD recorders, that compares record quality?

Depends on the models, etc. The PQ of my Sony HX-900 DVD recorder is better than any of my stand-alone units. But a couple are close.

But I still use the DVD stand alone players for convenience and to save wear and tear on the HX-900 as DaveC indicates.
I have to add that the RDR-HX900 also has excellent sound quality.

I agree, Rammitinski. It's just an all around fine unit.

The general rule of thumb is that most DVD recorders only make passable players. The playback quality is not necessarily the issue, it's that the recorders lack many of the features that are common on players. The (arms waving, feet stomping) other issue is the feeling that players are less expensive, so you will want to use a separate player to minimize the "hours of use" on the expensive recorder. Many people on this forum would recommend a separate player.
