I have never had to do this before. This week a couple of PBS programs in prime time are repeated at 3am. I need to record them then to avoid prime time conflicts.

Which takes precedence, the recording or the guide update? Do I/should I unplug the phone line to guarantee that the recordings will be made?

i'm pretty sure the guide update will wait until after the recording has finished.


if you're worried about it just unplug the phone chord or network cable that evening. You've usually got a couple days on your registration so long as it gets plugged in every few days it'll be ok.

I come across a message on my Replays once in-a-while stating that the guide update couldn't be done because a recording was in progress.

I've never had recordings interupted by a guide update on either my 3xxx or any of my 5xxxs, but I have had maintanence reboots during recordings ruining them, but only on my 5xxxs.

Pre-4K RTV's will only dial out during the period from about 3am to 6am. So if you're recording stuff during that entire period it will prevent a dialout.


My 55xx does broadband net connects at seemingly random times during the day or night. It seems like it does it approximately every 26 hours, so the time shifts every day. It also doesn't seem to mind doing a net connect concurrently with recording (the last connect was 9:04pm, while it was recording Raymond).

My 5040s connect via modem and I get the message on them as well.

My 4040 acts differently. For example, when it connects to server at 2:55 am before it finishes update, the 3:00 am show will not be recorded. I usually mannully connect to server (dial-up) before I go to bed, 4040 will not do the usual connect next morning. To be certain, to unplug phone line.

I have had at some points the guide not connecting because a recording was in progress, but have also had recordings not tape because it was in the middle of getting guide data (I use the phone to connect to RTV, so it takes longer to connect, if you have cable connection for RTV, this probably won't happen).

I have had mine (4x5504) do net connects in the middle of recordings causing the recording to fail. In the last week it has happened 4 times on 3 different units. It is easy to tell if it happened since the last net connect is when the recording terminates.


If you can unplug, I would do it.
