The Service manuals for these models have only just started showing up on the Internet. An E3 in the service manual says it means "Cannot write the data after trying three times." There is not much more to it than that. There are many reasons, the laser could be dying or dead. The disc could not be of the right type. There is a working section of the disc that can only be used 49 times before its used up and cannot be used again. But given its age, at 12 years old.. its very hard to diagnose, even the power supply capacitors could be exhausted.
Most people still using these are hobbyists specializing in repair. They have some technical skill to disassemble and swap out parts from similar models to localize and figure out which part is failing, and then deal with it. New parts have not been made for it since 2017 and there isn't much of an after market except for buying used models with different problems and salvaging parts from those.
