Looked at a F38310 last night and was told that it has no video outs for recording programs. Any way around this?

Yes I have 2 ways to record one is tapping either the Direct TV or cable converter, before you connect it to your F-type cable, you must find a source other than the TV itself. I have owned quite a few TV sets in my life, but *none* of them had video out. I hope this helps :)

O/T Could you name the TV sets that have video output? I know that all the VCR and DVD players have video *out* but I don't know of any TV sets.
Well I don't know from memory. I thought my old RCA monitor had some audio and video outs but it's been a while since I looked. My point is that since this particular unit has a built in decoder and Directv how am I suppose to hook up a VCR in the loop. Typically you would have a VCR or some other recording device in between the sat box and the monitor. There doesnt seem to be a way to record with out a vid stream emenating from the Satalite source.
You need a second DirecTV receiver. Also, an extra $4.99 per month. I use the one for my kitchen TV and run the cables through the basement to the VCR in the family room where the F38310 is. Works OK, but I have forgotten to set the channel correctly on the kitchen receiver a couple of times and ended up recording the kids Disney channels.
Well thats what I thought. It sounds like a real pain in the butt to have to hook up an additional sat receiver or record from another location. Especially if I want to get something like replaytv or a DVCR. he price sure is attractive on this set but I think I would rather have a more convenient setup. Thanks for the info...Jeff
I use a Directv Tivo for recording of SD and feed that in the S-Video input on the F38310. I don't see an issue here and I would have to do that with any HDTV.

Good luck with your search.

Jeff
So Jeff, you just bypass the built in Directv board? How does the Tivo unit fare compared to the built in unit? I assume that it can pass along only SD? Also does the F38310 have an Optical output to pass on DD 5.1 to a reciever or decoder? My current Dirtv RCA box does this. Thanks...Jeff
I know the WebTV can be hooked up from a F-Type cable. What kind of card would you need to run a D-TV cable company into your computer, then just put it on the hard drive. Could you use a f-type cable company into your computer, or is all the computers still running a 4:3 format, mine was from Dell in 2000 that I gave to my sisters family.

My unit is only one week old so I don’t have the courage to bypass anything as of yet! I use Directv Tivo as a recording device for SD. If you notice another post that I put up yesterday there are definite differences between the PQ with the two receivers. I have other PQ issues which hopefully can be resolved by going into the service menu. That is my next step. Below is the response that I received on the PQ issue between the two Directv recievers, which makes perfect sense to me.

This is almost certainly because the RCA never has to take the signal out of the digital domain until it hits the screen, unlike your external receiver, which takes the digital signal, converts it to analog, and sends it out the S-Video, where it is re-digitized and de-interlaced by the RCA.

The RCA also uses the equivalent of component inputs internally (although digital instead of analog), which gives you a little more color accuracy and resolution than S-Video.

The F38310 does have an Optical output to pass DD 5.1, but I am not using it so I can’t speak to how well it works.

Jeff

Please excuse my confusing post above. I am new to the forum and just learning the formating tools.

i got this set about one month ago and love it...

you can hook your tivo via the s video input on the rca

you then use the rca to select which video input you want to watch.

for me i press VCR 1 and that's my direct tivo input-- for the built in direct tv you hit the DIRECT TV button right on the remote. for OTA you hit TV on the remote-- very simple.

and yes the tv does have optical out-

in this set up you'll then need to have the a/v receiver do the audio switching to match your video input- that's why i'm buying the Harmony Remote 768! should end my multiple remote problems !

also i believe the direct feed to the internal tuner gives a slightly better picture quality then from the tivo-- not enough to bother me- plus the HD and DVD's are AMAZING!!

hope this helps
