SP! It looks as good as XP on my 32" Sony SD TV.

Depends on how long the show is, if it contains commercials and whether or not I plan to make a DVD copy. If I do plan to copy to DVD, my Pioneer lets me select the best custom speed/bitrate that will fill the DVD after editing out the commercials. If there are no commercials, and I plan to make a DVD copy, I just select "Auto" and the 640 selects the best bitrate for me. :)

If I don't plan to make a copy at all and just delete after watching, I usually select SP.
SP normally. When I need to record between 2 and 4 hours and I'm away and can't change discs, I'll use LP on my Panny ES-15 which is nearly as good as SP. I also have access to Flexible Recoding if I need to record something just over 2 hours.
When I record SD source material, I use SP mode. When I record HD material (downrezzed to SD of course), I usually use XP mode to get that bit of extra sharpness and smoothness when I stretch the "squeezed" picture to fill my 16:9 TV screen.
SP would normally suffice for standard def programs. However, I tend to use my Sony's HSP (1.5 hour/disc) mode most often, due to most of my recordings coming off the Discovery and History Channels which usually whittle down to 45 minutes per broadcast hour once the commercials are removed. HSP allows two such programs to be placed on one disc with maximum quality.

For downrezzed HiDef programming, depending on the program I use either HQ or HSP.
