I'm trying to figure a way to play the 5.1 audio tracks of a DVD through my current quad system. What I have is an old Sansui quad amp that's been refurbished and sounds great. What I would like to find is a cheap DVD player that has separate audio outputs for front L&R, rear L&R and center/sub. Then I could pump front & rear L&Rs through the discreet quad channels and hook up a separate powered sub for the center channel. Is such a thing made, or do they all have to go to a receiver for 5.1 decoding? Looking specifically to decode DTS audio signal.

Any DVD player with 5.1 analog outputs would do what you describe. But most don't have volume control so you would not be able to change the volume for your whole system with one knob. A low priced brand name player with integrated DTS/DD decoders at a good price ($129) is the Panasonic DVD-S55S, but it won't be available for a few more weeks.

ok, well that works. Volume could be controlled through the amp. So analog outputs have the three separate outs, correct? Front, rear and center-sub? Will every DVD player decode DTS, dolby surround, AC3 and all DVD audio formats or will I have to be careful in that regard? Thanks for the info

5.1 analog outputs have a total of six connectors: left, right, center, left surround, right surround, and subwoofer. Your 4-channel amp could control the volume for left, right, left surround, and right surround, but the center and subwoofer channel volumes would have to be adjusted separately. All players can support Dolby Digital 2-channel. But not all DVD players have built-in multi-channel DTS or DVD-Audio decoders. In fact, most don't even have 5.1 analog outputs. Make sure that the player you buy actually has what you need. Again, the Panasonics are quite popular on this forum. Recent models that include the 5.1 analog outputs are: A320U, RV80, A7, A10, RP82S, RP91N/K, S55S.
