Originally I had planned to just stack equipment or nail in some basic wooden shelves but then it hit me that wiring would be a pain in the a**. So, now I'm trying to find some options for equipment racks that can mount in my media niche and be pulled out for wiring and changes. The niche is 19" wide, 35.75" high (was supposed to be 36" but builder goofed on calculating drywall thickness), and 21.75" deep.


The equipment I want to put into it fits fine for width (max is 17) & depth (max is 17), but I am having trouble with the height. Here are the items I want to put into it, along with their height :

Tivo - 3.5"

UPS - 3.75

Power conditioner - 3.5

Receiver - 7.5

DVD Changer - 7.75


Worst case, if shelves are taking up too much space, I'd be comfortable stacking the UPS at the bottom with the power conditioner and the DVD changer on top of thse. Then I'd put in a shelf, then the Tivo, then another shelf and then the receiver on top. Adding up just the equipment, I have a total height of 26". Are there any pull-out racks with very low profile bases? The only one that I looked at had a 4" base and then I'd have no room for shelves.


Any ideas/recs? (Besides telling me to rip the wall open and make the niche 48" tall, I'm already considering that but its not really an option)

It sounds like you have very specific space requirements. An off-the-shelf solution (like the one suggested above) will be expensive and not quite perfect. Making pull out shelves yourself would be relatively simple using pull-out drawer guide rails and wood panels from a hardware store. It's what I did when I built my A/V rack into two end tables. Space was tight making my components hard to access so I made all the drawers pull-out. It's a very elegant solution.

How well do those work with heavier equipment such as amps & receivers?
