Did you calibrate using the reference tones in the receiver?
If you have the Avia setup disc, the speaker balance tones are supposed to be calibrated at 85db. So you turn the receiver up until either the center or left channel reads 85db, and then adjust the other channels from there. That volume setting on the receiver is "reference".
I would guess that on your receiver, 85db would be about -10 (assuming you are going towards 0 as you go up).
