regza 42lz196 as computer monitor?

1054 Views 12 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  chrisherbert
I bought a 42lz196 (1080p) and while Toshiba says hdmi input does not support a pc, consensus is that it does (at 1920 x 1080i, 60 hz, native). When hooked up to mac mini g4 (not intel core2duo) on dvi/hdmi cable, text very fuzzy, hard to read. 720 much better pic. Is this common? Is problem with tv or graphics card on pc? If I want to be able to use occasionally as monitor, would 37" 720p set be better option? All input appreciated since I only have a couple more days to make keep/return decision.

Thanks.

It's sounding like this line(regza) of lcd's arn't going to be the best choice as far as pc users and 360 vga users are concerned. I'm not sure why toshibia decided to limit it uses this way. Perhaps they're more focused on the hdtv aspect of these lcds to keep costs down where other companies seem to be leading more towards promoting multmedia use and more options in that aspect.
Is it the regza or large hdtv in general? Is anyone else out there getting a great, clear pic (including sharp text) when using a 42" (or 40" or 37") hdtv as monitor on dvi/hdmi? If so, what is the setup--tv as well as pc?
I see that you said you're using 1920x1080i -- interlaced resolutions are unsuitable for PCs. Try 1920x1080p. That should give much, much better results.

If that doesn't work, have you tried connecting by VGA?
Display options listed by mac mini only go up to 1920 x 1080 (interlaced). Is a 1080p output generally available?

VGA only goes up to 768, analog signal, so not so good.
There's nothing wrong with analog. If you can get VGA to work at 1080p, using that should have image quality equal to DVI/HDMI.

I think the Mac Mini should be able to do 1080p. 1080i, as you've seen, is really awful for computers.

Have you tried 1920x1080 over VGA? I'd give it a shot.
768 is max over vga (just tried it again to make sure), and PQ worse than over dvi/hdmi. When I open up all possible display options and select 1920 x 1080, get black screen, and when select pic size on remote (which would allow me to select native) get message on screen "not available." Will most computers do 1080p? (this mini was to be a backup/tv dedicated one when new macs come).
I think 1080p is pretty common, yes. Maybe you're having single link bandwidth issues? I don't know.

Actually, after doing a quick search it looks like that set doesn't actually accept 1080p, just 1080i.

We're using your same computer with our Olevia 537H, and the picture is absolutely crystal clear! We are going DVI to HDMI

Yes, many LCD TVs do an excellent job as computer monitors. They do need to accept their native resolution for good performance.

Single link bandwidth issue????

Nope. The 42lz196 does accept 1080p. It's the 42lx196 that doesn't accept 1080p. They are both being replaced by the 42HL167 and the not yet released 42lx177 (both of which will take 1080p). I'm still trying to figure out the difference between the 42lz196 (closed out) and the new 42HL167 (which is billed as champaigne on a beer budget). Lost in Regza-land. Please help.

Sorry. I should have been more specific. That's at 720p on the 537H. Is anyone getting crystal clear at 1080 on any sets (37" to 42")?
I know that people are getting perfect 1080p on LCD TVs.
