Hello all-


I am having to replace my trusty 6 yr old gyration remotes because my 7 year old has learned how to use the setup and is not all that nice to them. I am running win7MC and I plan to use that as long as I can, it works well with my old hardware and does everything I want. I would like them to be as low cost as possible because I dont want to invest much in my old hardware and i want 3 screens to work the same for the family. In a perfect world here is what I am looking for:


RF functions

- some sort of mouse capability - loved the gyration for this

- all the basic MC play controls

- D-pad

- bonus - a green button or something I can map it to

IR functions

- Basic learning/programmable for the TV- power/ volume/ and possibly source switching



I found these two below and thought they might work and add a keyboard. Has anyone used these with windows?

If you have an iOS device, the Mobile Mouse app works just like your gyration (wave it around to move the mouse) and does everything else you asked, except IR.


The Harmony Smart Keyboard is the only device I know of that combines keyboard, mouse and universal remote all in one.

Thanks mdavej- I do use hippo remote and have tried mobilemouse. But, I really do not like tying up my phone and my wife and son need to use it too. Have you heard anything about the two remotes I referenced above? They seem to do everything I need, but the specs/reviews are tough to decipher what it is all about.

Thinking of getting another rii actually lol.

 

Does the job i need it for, but thinking of getting another with backlit keys. The touchpad is pretty responsive i find, keyboard is just a basic keyboard, which is all i need for an HTPC. Button layout could maybe be a little better, but you get used to the layout.

OP's model of Rii may be ok. But mine, with the clicky dome keys, doesn't work well at all. At least 2 letters need a lot of force on one, and 1 bad letter on another. Sometimes my desire for a deal clouds my thinking

I think the OP wants an air mouse. I find those incredibly frustrating to use. So I prefer a touch pad as well. For something I can actually type with, I use a Logitech K400.

Good luck, I've been looking for Gyration replacements but I haven't had any luck.  Nothing comes close to that level of mouse control on a remote control.

I've been in the same boat kind of... I used to use gyration remotes but hated they never had the audio punch though to control my AVR or TV volume instead. Been a die hard windows media center fan and have been using the WMC remotes thta had this and some back lit keys, but those are hard to come by and don;t have the gyration features. With windows 8 I have been using the Modern UI Netflix and Hulu more than the WMC integrations so the WMC remote has been hurting me a bit so was looking for something like a gyration. But I still want audio punch through or programmable keys


I found this one not to long ago and have been thinking of getting one to test with. I have a few of the Rii mini keyboards with touchpad and while nice I want a more "Home Theater" style remote

they have it in both black and white, I like black better but I think white would be easier to see in the dark since there is no backlight.
