Repair= New or Refurbished

If you sent your Xbox in for repair and you get another one back how do you know if it's new or refurbished? My old one had a serial # 60########## new one is #81#########. I would think it was new but how can you tell?

They always send you refurbs that break in the matter of weeks.
There's a 'built on' date on the rear info sticker along with the serial # and such. That's usually a good clue.

Last time mine broke down, a replacement I had had for some 15 months, they sent me one built in 1/06. The fans were very loud right away, and the drive made horrible grinding noises when spinning down. I called and forced them to let me send it back in, but I really had to work to convince the woman to talk to a supervisor, and I did so by being very adamant about the whole thing being unacceptable. She told me since this had been replacement unit #2 for me, she had been told I was eligible to get a new unit instead of a refurb, but it would take up to 6 weeks! I told them no thanks, maybe next time. The replacement I just received was built in 11-06, the fans are much quiter and the drive is fine. In other words, this one feels like new, even though I know it isn't, but it's definitely a lot better than the previous replacement I had received.
I guess I will need to wait. I haven't received it yet but called Xbox support and asked why the device service home change the serial # on my box and had to ask for a tracking #. They said they gave me another one. I forgot to ask if it was new or refurbished. Mine had a 4-11-06 date #60##########. The other one is #81##########. I guess I will know Tuesday by the date. Thanks.

I hope this isn't the case. But if it was I would think we could make a class action law suit??? If it weren't for Live and a few exclusive games I would just get another system. But live is the best to me. I know 10 ppl with Xbox 360 and only 2 went back including mine. Twice for me.
One person even plays 10-12 hours a day with the box in a console= hot area. Mine is in a rack with good air flow. Go figure.

There's been mad threads about this, should go in a FAQ.

My 360 was repaired from Rings of Death and the same console was sent back to me.

It's not the same console if they issued me a new ss#.They already told me it was a different one just forgot to ask if it was new or refurbished. I will know Tuesday. This is the second time. The first time it came back and lasted under 1 hr. Went back 2nd time. You would think it was new by the ss#??? Guess I need to see the date.
well the one i got back that appeared to be mine just by examining the serial # but:

1) completely different mac address than my original

2) the sticker with my serial number had been sloppily put on, the sticker on my original was flush and perfect..this one wasn't.

3) my "on" button on my original used to click when you pressed it. this one doesn't.

4) my original had a casing defect that isn't on this one....

I'm going to say they send refurbished to everyone. No way can they turn around repairs this fast if they are getting flooded like I suspect they are. If I were to guess...they have a stock pile of refurbished 360's and when you send in your 360 they grab one....print out some serial #'s that match your old, place them on....flash the bios so xbox live recognizes the new one as the old one...and then they send it out.

makes since to me.
