Repair or --- Decided to Ewave

1979 Views 23 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  chilort
Was gifted a Harman Kardon 330B receiver and pair of Model 40 Series B speakers.

The surrounds on the woofers are shot. I've never replaced surrounds.

Thoughts?

Find a local Speaker Repair shop to do refoam the speakers. They can do it properly and it doesn't cost much. Sometimes it is just better to replace a speaker. The repair guy will know.
Refoam is pretty easy to DIY. Worst case is you end up with garage speakers for $20-$30.
Might go econowave on them after speaking with lilmike. I didn't even know about that. ...and I call myself an AVSer.
Probably going to be the slowest ewave build ever. I did get the compression drivers. I picked up PRV based on lilmike's suggestion. Love the white grills too and will clean them up. Going to figure out how to use magnets to hold them on rather than the brads that HK used.

Parts Express offers speaker repair kits.
Woofers are already in the garbage. Going to go with a Dayton PA 10 and the ewave crossover. Going to beef up the boxes and then measure away.
Is this what you are doing? I just haven't encountered an ewave before.

So are you building the crossover yourself, or is this a generic Econowave crossover? If the later is the case, I would proceed with caution as I have no idea how a generic EconoWave crossover is going to be any where close to be optimally designed.
lilmike sent me some information on crossover design. The plan was to start with information on the generic ewave and then tweak based upon characteristics of what I have on hand. That would then be followed by measurements and then a decision would have to be made about modifying the crossovers or going with what's there.
Using the Dayton H6512 waveguide? I'm not familiar with the PRV D280Ti....assuming it is similar to the Selenium D220Ti you should be pretty close with "high efficency" ewave crossover variant http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=151282&d=1242968714 though you might need to adjust L2 and C2 to compensate for the rising woofer response similar to what was done for "JBL LE14" crossover variant http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=151339&stc=1&d=1243017683

Good luck!

Yes, I'm using the Dayton H6512 wave guide or at least that is my plan. I've ordered from PE but they're on back order. Thanks for the tip about the x-over.
Not much progress because work takes up too much of my time. But, I did get some 1/2" MDF cut to reinforce the backs (used an entire tube of PL Premium on the backs of the two boxes) and then I had some spare oak that I used to tie the front and back together.

I'm hoping the wave guides arrive soon. PE changed my order from the Dayton to the Pyle part and showed an expected date of delivery for the Pyle of 3/28/2014 but that has now come and gone and their website now says their waiting on delivery information. Good thing I'm not in a hurry I guess.

Got my woofers mounted. Exciting .... I know.

Now I need to learn how to us PCD I guess and get my crossover designed.

Looks like the waveguide was designed for that cabinet.

A can of black spray paint will fix those screws before you install them.

Yeah, less than 1/8" on either side of the horn. I was a little worried when I first pulled them out of the box.

I'll probably find a paint marker and will fix the screw color after everything is tightened down for the "last" time.
My box from PE came yesterday but one of the resistors was not in the box. I ran to the local electronics store (I'm in Atlanta, so we have real one) but they didn't have anything in that power level that wasn't wire wound (i.e. inductive). I picked it up anyway. If measurements suggest they need changed then I'll change them after complaining to PE. I'm going to build these up on Vector board. That probably wasn't the best "econo" option.
So I built this crossover:

I need to finish up the modifications to the grills. I cannot be believe what these sound like with only 17w.

I still like my RF-7iis (and for what I paid for them, regardless of what I HEAR, I will biased toward them for some time) but these sound really good.
