Repeated problems w. layer change on DVD+R and DVD+R DL in Toshiba, stops there

I am having this problem across the board with a fairly large number of discs I have had for some time now. They have always played just fine in every other player I have. Whats more interesting is my Verbatim DL discs burnt in dvd-rom typesetting also stop at the layer break.

We are talking first class media here for the 4.7gb discs too.

How many other folks are having this problem with their Toshiba hardware?

I love the upconversion quality of the Toshiba, it comes pretty close and in a few areas even exceeds my Pioneer Elite 59avi, but I have years worth of recorded and backed up home made dvds. So far this is the one real issue I am seeing outside the remote for myself.

I can live with the slow load times and the player resetting to the beginning to restart play if you stop it. It seems Toshiba says that has to do with the DRM management and the player being more like a pc because it has so much horsepower.

If it is DVD+R DL and DVD+RW that you're using which is a Sony R/RW DVD format compatibility problems may arise even with some DVD players especially in terms of layer change because the one approved by DVD Forum and compatible with DVD-Video players are DVD-R DL and DVD-RW.

So it is not surprising but you may record that same content on DVD-R DL and see if the problem still exists on both HD DVD and DVD players.

A Verbatim DL +R I burned of the old Praying Mantis show from DiscoveryHD jumped something like 10 minutes ahead around the 24 minute mark and I figured it might have been a layer change problem, but a movie I burned the same way that took up almost the whole DL disk (I had to put the end on a separate single layer disk) played all the way through without any problems that I can recall.

I have done a fair amount of playback testing on the HD-A1 with "backup" copies of SD DVDs, using both single and dual layer +R media. For the most part, all of the "backups" would play fine. Occasionally, when a disk would 'hang', pressing the Play button once or twice would cause the disk to resume playback.

Tonight I tested a "backup" copy of Hero, which was burned at 4X using a Verbatim dual layer disk. Playback was problematic and the first chapter had numerous problems, requiring it to be skipped. The Rewind function would start, but could not be stopped .

After some thought, I realized most, if not all, of the previously tested dual layer DVDs were burned at 2.4X rather than 4X. Based on the realization, I burned another copy of Hero at 2.4X and to add a 'degree of difficulty', I used a Memorex dual layer disk rather than Verbatim ;).

Well, it is playing now in the HD-A1 and flawlessly. No problems with Chapter 1, the main menu, the Rewind function, etc. And oh yes, it looks gorgeous :D!

I think the key for the successful use of +R DL media will be the burn speed. At this point, all of my dual layer disks created at 2.4X have worked with no problems. The dual layer disks created earlier at 4X will occasionally encounter problems. My single layer +R disks were burned at 4X and none have had any issues on playback using the HD-A1.

All of the disks, single and dual layer, were burned with Nero 7 on a Plextor 716A, with the DV-ROM setting enabled.
