Replace Epson ProCinema 7500UB with Epson 5050UB?

791 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  gxs0lvi
Hello,

I have a dedicated theater, no ambient light, painted dark and a white 110" transparent screen. The throw is 15' and the projector is ceiling mounted. I watch 65% movies, 25% games and 10% tv.

I have had the 7500UB for maybe 8 years. Works fine, enjoy the picture perhaps a tad loud.

I am thinking of replacing the 7500 with a 5050UB. The 5050 is a lot brighter and I am sure better is all regards. Is the difference worth the $2500 or should I wait a few years? Any negatives with the 5050? Any other projects I should consider?

Thank you

You might be happy with a much-more-affordable 5040. I have gone from the 6100-->8700-->5040 in a similar setup as you, and have used other Epsons like the 2150 and 3700. For under $1300 you can get a 5040 which is a significant upgrade in all areas over the older models in PQ, contrast, lumens, features, placement.

While there are small improvements going from 5040-->5050, I don't think it justifies a $1,000+ increase. In a few years, maybe Epson will have a no-compromise laser projector in the same price tier, and you will have enjoyed a massive upgrade from the 7500UB.
It's well worth it if you can afford the $2500 (aren't the refurbed still selling cheaper then that ?). The major drawbacks of the 5040 are the 10Gb HDMI and lack of the HDR slider. If gaming the gimped HDMI is a no go and streaming can be difficult but not impossible to work with the lower bandwidth. If you strictly watch BR for movies and never intend to game in HDR the 5040 might be worth the $1k savings.

Epson finally learned that $2100 or $2300 made the 5050 a steal and they could get $2500 for it instead. They stay in stock longer now but still do sell out. The price we got our 5050 for is kinda silly when you think about it, especially with the support they give.
Thanks for the helpful responses. I am going to go with the 5040 now and upgrade to the laser later.
